Why is everyone crying about the Rebel Flag.............

Why are people making a big deal over this. I dont see it. Its not that big of a deal. Its not like they are walking around in KKK suits. Does anyone know the history of the Rebel Flag? If so, can you please explain it to me.

 

May I assume that you are referring to the purple and gold rebel flags that were getting all the attention last week?

 

Confederate battle flag. Seen by most African Americans as respresentative of the South and their desire to keep the institution of slavery. Seen by most rednecks as a banner of "southern pride".

Look, I was born here, grew up here and still live here. I'm happy to be in and from the south. I think there's plenty to be proud of. In addition, I'm a white descendent of Jefferson Davis, and the Davis name still runs in the family. In my younger years I was all about the rebel flag and tried to keep that "it's about southern pride...the war was about states' rights, not slavery" BS argument, but as I've gotten older I've come to realize that if you can't honestly see why that flag would be offensive to black people, you're living in a redneck dreamland. Also, if you feel that way (that black people shouldn't be offended and should get over it), chances are you've never had any close, meaningful relationships with any black people. Try explaining to someone you really care about who's black that the flag doesn't represent racism. It doesn't work.

Personally I think the rednecks should get over it.

(Oh, and I do realize that I'm setting myself up for many of you to start blasting me, so have at it.)

 

There are about 5 threads on this on the Rant. To me it comes down to how do you represent your university and how would you like it to be seen in the eyes of others. that alone is enough reason for me to say that the confedrate flag in any color should not be flown at LSU events. No matter what you feel, if you do not believe that it is seen as a racist symbol, not just by blacks, but by most Americans, then you are mistaken.

For me, it is pretty much the same as the Nazi cross and how it is viewed by many around the world. It has different meanings for different people, but most asociate it with concentration camps and genocide.

 

Black folks should spend all of this energy on raising their kids or something, not on a ****ing flag. Ban FUBU while you are at it.
