Don't know why anyone ever thought he would. If he transfers he loses a year. or he can sit that year out here and roll as a senior after JR goes pro. Now he just has another option. Try and win the starting job.
I would have to respectfully disagree here. The guys at college level are bigger and playing with more power and speed. I do hope no one ever gets hurt, but that is always the danger with a contact sport like football. Also, there's always the freak accident or injury; I believe Broussard was one example; the other was Matt Mauck when a big (fat?) defenceman fell on his foot. Even when your own teammates got airborne with tackles may land on the wrong spot. There's always some luck involved, good or bad in deciding whether one goes through the seasons injury free. ________ Sexybirdie
I didn't think he would prior to the Peach Bowl (due to his "workmanlike" attitude and competitive nature) and I certainly don't think he'd do it now either--especially not with that piece of hardware sitting on his desk for being Peach Bowl MVP. I think that gave him a spark--not that he didn't have one to begin with--but it reinforced his stance on "being one play away from being the starter". That play happened, and now, with JR looking like his wrist injury is more serious that expected, Flynn is in the same position that JR was in last year when Flynn was hurt early in the season and couldn't compete at 100%. When Flynn became ill (not sure if it was the flu or whatever) but when he missed time during the start of fall practice, JR got more reps while Flynn fell behind a little. So JR won the job as backup to Randall. I think this spring shapes up to be the same thing--except roles could be reversed. Besides, since Flynn already has burned his redshirt, any year he "sits out" would come straight off his two remaining eligible seasons if he were to go to another I-A program. Right now, Flynn's options are simple: 1. Stay at LSU! and compete for the starting job in '06 and '07 as a Junior and Senior respectively 2. Transfer to another I-A school, sit out his Junior year due to transfer requirements and ONLY play as a Senior ...OR..... 3. Transfer to a I-AA school and play as a Junior and Senior (like Craig Nall)...Remember, a player from a I-A school that transfers to a I-AA does not have to sit out that transfer year. Flynn has shown us that he has enough talent to be a starter in I-A. I know it's only one start, but that one start showed me that he can start for LSU. So I can't see him stepping down to I-AA. I think playing at that level is beneath him (nothing against I-AA programs). And I think he's TOO competitive to walk away from the challenge here to only play 1 season at another I-A school.
there are some real football geniuses posting in this thread, they'll try out in the spring, I'm sure Matt Flynn's performance didn't hurt his stock any. Some of the "intangibles" a QB needs will be remembered. Will he start? maybe, maybe not. It depends on alot of things. Each one's performance. health. attitude. etc.. each game is a new oppurtunity. those of you saying Western Kentucky in other words saying MF couldn't hold JR's jock strap, you have once again proved your ability to analyze talent. ANd you may want to stick with your day job. No limit you missed the boat on this one. those guys are DIFFERENT players, each brings something to the table. Which one is better for LSU? I think this year with MAtt at the helm we would not have lost to Tenn. just an opinion, no way to prove it, I could be wrong. Next year?? who the hell knows. Alot of things change from year to year. remains to be seen. I'd like to see MF take a few more game snaps in a pressure situation. but there is no way to know for sure what is going to happen, a best guess is as good as it gets from anyone here.
Good post. ...and did I miss the "rumor memo" about Flynn and Western Kentucky??? How'd that get started???
Whoever ends up third after spring practice will likely transfer. Could it be Flynn? Yep. Just like Craig Nall, Barrington Edwards, and Rick Clausen . . . players who are good enough to start in Division I will find some greener pastures if they find themselves deep on the bench.
