Why does the media think Weis is such a great coach?

Is Indiana Tiger a Tiger fan, or BitterND? You've been singing ND's and Weis' praises for two straight days now.

It looks, to me, like another poster noted: Weis' biggest problem this year on offense is that the talent TW recruited is gone.

I think Weiss is a good coach. He was hyped because he turned BQ into a decent QB. He also had some standout athletes on his team last year but those guys are gone.

I believe he is a good coach but because of the slump in recruiting that ND has had for a long time it will require more patience from ND. I think with the attention he has gotten guys will want to go to play for him and his classes will get better each year. But they will not be very good this year.

But how, exactly, do we know if Weis is a good head coach?

We don't, it's all hype at this point. Being a good coordinator doesn't mean one will be a successful HC. Running a bigtime program is a tad bit more complicated than just worrying about Xs and Os on one side of the ball.

Just like some here are saying they want Fisher or Pelini should Miles leave. It's not that simple.

Weiss went 19-6 in his first two years. He had 2 losses to USC and one each to Ohio State, Michigan, and LSU. He only lost one game to a team that it could be argued that he shouldn't have lost to (Michigan State in a shoot out in the 3rd game of his first season). He hasn't had what I would consider any major upset wins, but his only opportunities were against those 5 teams who are more talented and also well coached. My point is not to present this as evidence of genius, but for what it is; solid results by a solid coach.

As far as talent goes, all those guys you mentioned are gone and as previously stated, Weiss got good results with them. If you were to rate those two classes (2004 and 2005) on stars alone, the 2004 class (Ty's last) would have ranked around 18-20. But you need to note that fully one half of that class is no longer on the roster. The 2005 class would have ranked in the mid-twenties somewhere. Combined there are only 23 players left on the roster from those two classes.

As a general rule, healthy programs need to average around 15-16 key contributors (quality starters and backups) per class to have sustained success. With these two classes ND is nowhere close on either quantity or quality relative to their expectations and they will pay the price this year. Things will improve next year and they will be running on all cylinders in 2009.

Because of where I live I'm generally more familiar with ND than others, but I'm not a ND fan at all. I try to look at things objectively (at least from my perspective anyway). It's been my experience that a lot of people get all ape**** emotional about them and I just try to bring some reality to bear.

Welcome to my world- I try to be objective about CFB too and get accused of being a USC/Pac10 fan. :hihi:

I do like to play devil's advocate cause it stimulates discussion but for the record, there's NOTHING more I'd love than for us to meet and beat USC in the NC game. :thumb:

They are on TV just about every week, ESPN cannot have a sportscast without updating everyone on something Notre Dame and the print media is all over every damn thing that comes out of South Bend. So, don't give us that "because of where I live" crap. We get more Irish coverage down here than any team except LSU. Weis has had ample opportunity to show that he's that "Special" coach that he's been made out to be. He's not and his record at ND proves that. I don't have to live in Rudytown to see that. He is fat though.
