If Mauck stays healthy, he is the man for the duration. I saw marked improvement last year in the Florida game before he went down. He looked settled, poised, relaxed, and in full command of the entire offense, and he showed it with two touchdown passes. We will never know for sure what would've happened had he stayed healthy, but I am certain we don't lose three conference games down the stretch with Mauck at the helm all the way in 2002. Maybe two, at worst, definitely not three. Barring injury, of course, Mauck is the guy. I would probably look for Marcus Randall to consider a transfer to Southern or Grambling St. next year, because Jamarcus Russell probably is the QB of the future. For all of you thinking Russell can play immediately, well, maybe he can, but he won't. He will be redshirted. There is no need to play him right now. Better to give him a year to learn the offense and get conditioned to the college game.
I completely agree, Jetstorm. Mauck is the man. He did nothing but get better with every game last year, and from all the spring reports, it sounds as if the trend is continuing. Plus, he will be surrounded by talent. This OL is going to be GREAT, and we still have Michael Clayton. I think we will see Clayton have a break-out year this year. I see some similarities to the 2001 season. Will Mauck/Clayton be the next incarnation of Davey/Reed? I know Mauck doesnt have Davey's arm, but we could see similar production.
I picked Flynn because from the videos I have seen, I love his talent. I truely think his passing ability (yes, passing) will enable him to take over the job IF Mauck gets hurt.
Have you seen Russell? I havent seen anything of Flynn, but I have seen Russell play in person. Russell is a phenom, and if he has a good head on his shoulders, he will be a superstar. I have no basis for comparison, but I cant see LSU having two all-star caliber QBs at once. I dont know, you may be right. In any event, I hope neither of them play, and Mauck throws for 3000 yards.
I haven't seen either Russell or Flynn. I have heard a lot more about Russell than I have heard about Flynn and I hope its all true. Mauck won't throw for 3000 yards but if he can pass for 2000 and avoid interceptions it would take a lot of pressure off of the running game and keep the chains moving.
Mauck is probably the most polished of the bunch (at this stage). No, he won't set the SEC on fire in the passing yards category, but he is athletic and can scramble and make things happen. Randall is just too inconsistant. He would play like a stud one week, and then look like he was lost the next. Perhaps experience has quelled that--but my money is still on Mauck. JaMarcus will be awesome! ...But I'm all for giving him a year to watch and learn. :geaux:
I agree but if JaMarcus is that good I would like to see him become the backup to Mauck and get some experience this year.
I saw some clips of Flynn and he is pretty impressive. Reminds you a lot of Robert Lane. Can throw and run. Saw some tape of JR and he looked impressive also. Now, take that HS tape and throw it out the window cuz it don't mean shit. Let's see how they react with a 6'6" 300 lb. DT who runs a 4.8 40 chasing them. I don't care who plays QB. Whoever it is needs to be able to hit an open receiver, not throw Int's, be a leader on the field, and most important be consistent.
