1. Come on guys...We've all heard the report (Well, I just saw it here, so I'm not sure that I can say it's "substantiated" since I didn't actually hear it) that on the radio Chris Landry said he had helped LSU with the search and that there were some big names...

We've also heard Skip talk about "big names" that we would be surprised to hear about...

I'm of the opinion that Houston Nutt, Butch Davis, and Petrino are not the guys he's referring to and has been referring to...

So...Who are your "big name" guesses...

(Please make at least one serious guess for every "Big Bird" or "James R. Hoffa" or "Bear Bryant" guess)
  2. not a big name but why has mike bellotti not even been mentioned? neither has tedford.

that being said, its probably mike riley.
  3. According to the rules of this thread, you must now give three "real" guesses, since you made jokes out of your first three...

    Oh wait...You're serious?
  4. Bertman is digging deep....

    Monroe, LA (AP)

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman is more than impressed with UL-Monroe head coach Charlie Weatherbie. "He's got all the makings of a winner. The man understands the game and the game comes natural to him. We'll see what he says after we interview him on Monday (January 3rd)." Bertman would give no further details.
Weatherbie, the former Utah State and Navy coach, has expressed interest in the LSU opening after Nick Saban had announced his departure just days earlier. He is considered a front-runner, along with current Louisville coach Bobby Petrino and former Dallas Cowboy standout Jack Del Rio - the current head coach of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. Weatherbie's salary would be expected to quadruple if he is chosen as the new head coach in bayou country.
"Right now, it's all touch and go. We'll see where we are come Monday. I still have a solid group of kids here. I want to make the right decision", said the 48 year-old Weatherbie who has three years remaining on his current contract.
Weatherbie led both Utah State and Navy to bowl games during his tenure. He took the Navy Midshipmen to the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii after 12 straight losing seasons in Annapolis. He took over a struggling ULM program and is turning it around after the departure of previous head coach Mike Collins.
Jack Del Rio and Bobby Petrino are also being interviewed next week. LSU officials and Skip Bertman expect to make an announcement next week.

My guess on who the "big name" is would be Ferentz, or Del Rio

  5. big names? im not jumping on the del rio name since its the one i want and would prefer to let it shock me when named. I simply wanted to know why neither of those 2 have been mentioned being skip seems to like the petrinos and hal mummes of the world who have proved very little.

riley is an ex nfl coach which id consider at this point.
  6. I would guess that the big names are Jack Del Rio and perhaps other NFL head coach quality candidates like Brad Childress or Mike Nolan.
  7. im not really sure and dont really care to speculate as it has become clear that there are people that are in fact going about this with skip and asking or being asked to keep quite for varoius reasons
it seems that all the possible coaches that the media has connected with LSU and talks have something to gain out of making the talks public
    JDR - leverage with Jax
Nutt - Sextons client and we know how he loves to get his clients out and it seems that the Nutt situation might have been just that get your name printed with a big time coaching position for future or present use
CBP - may have acutually been actively seeking the job but it dosnt hurt him by getting his name out their and to take a shot at the HC position if he wants to play big time football he will have to jump ship eventually unless the Big East does something
miles - not much reason here if he wasnt serious about taking the job but it probably caught some Mich. fans eye as a potential replacement in the future
    bobby
these guys are not big name coaches but I think at least deserved an interview from skip

looking back to NS hire he was kept quite for most of the process and maybe thats how skip likes to keep his top choices so no media, fans, etc input have an affect on the process

so i wont speculate but im fairly sure that skip is working hard and has some surprised up his sleave for the future
  8. Maybe I need to work on my powers of subtle sarcasm...But that was what was meant by my reply...and I apologize if you took that the wrong way...

    (The Kinder, Gentler TE)

    LOL!
  9. Jim Fassel
    Jimmy Johnson
    Doug Williams
  10. Here's a "wild guess" of a comptetent guy with a great offensive mind and a Super Bowl pedigree: Jim Fassel.

After coaching in the Big Apple and having all the ups and downs of a successful stint leading the Giants, I would not be surprised if Fassel would not jump at a high-paying, top-notch college job. He is known a a good teacher as a coach. He is a good person who players love. He would recruit well with his genuine nature and great credentials.

    Again, just a guess...
