Since it was nearing Mardi Gras, the colors green, purple and gold were abundant in the city. The store they visited had not yet received its shipment of green streamers, so Coates and Pleasant bought out the store's entire supply of purple and gold ribbons. They returned to the stadium, dressed up the locker room with the selected colors and purple and gold promptly became the colors of the LSU Fightin' Tigers.
