Dumpster babies. That happens, what, maybe three times per year? And it's prosecuted pretty strongly. This is what happens when people freak out and start thinking that everything is an "epidemic." (ie, kid who digs heavy metal kills himself -- we must censor/ban the music).

I also think my parents would have loved to legally get rid of 16-year-old me.

This absolutely makes me sick. Look, teenagers can all be pains in the @$$; I know because I've taught them for the past 17 years, but geez, dropping them off at a hospital to get rid of them?

And Nebraska has been allowing this nonsense? It's ridiculous.

One of the cases was a single mother whose 12 year old daughter was having repeated promiscuous sex, using hard drugs, and refusing to basically do anything she was told.

There comes a point for people when you reach the end.

If my teenage son was doing the above, I'd be calling the police. My cousin needed to get arrested before he straightened his ass up.

 If your teenage son did drugs you would turn him in to the police for his own good? Geez . . .

My Dad was a 19th-century type of hard-ass and we went through a four-year period in my late teens where we didn't communicate very well. He threatened to whip my ass more than once and told me to hit the road if didn't like his style. But he always had my back if I had an encounter with the law.

    Always.

And what part did a MOTHER of a 12-year-old ho have? 12? How was she getting out of the house to do all of this stuff?

i think there are other states with laws like this to allow newborns to be turned in at designated safe havens to be taken into state custody with no fear of prosecution. which is better than the alternative of throwing them in a dumpster. everything i have read (i have been following this for a while) is that the law was intended as a way to prevent dumpster babies.

but the nebraska lawmakers were complete idiots for writing and passing such a vague law that any minor can be dumped. add to that their governor publically kept saying he would not call a special session but allow the lege to take it up next session which caused a run of sorts on people dumping kids of all ages. when he finally did call a special session, the barn door was not only open, the whole freakin herd had escaped.

I said if the kid was acting uncontrollably, I would. It takes that sometimes.

As for my cousin, he was actually a son of an undercover narcotics officer who was busted for possession. He needed a couple of nights in the tank to straighten himself out. It was really the end of a long string of stuff that finally came to a head.

The Marines finally turned him around completely.

In fact, that whole situation drove my other cousin (his brother) to where he's basically isolated himself from the family because he didn't appreciate how he was treated vs the 'prodigal' as it were. I haven't seen the dude in 8 years, and neither has anyone else.

So you are saying it's impossible for a kid to sneak out? Use the phone to call her friend? Steal mom's keys and open the locked door? Open a window?

Perhaps it's not impossible, but I deal with kids this age daily and have for 17 years, and the vast majority are incredibly wonderful kids, some with occasional lapses in good judgment, but otherwise, 95% are terrific.

The other 5% are usually the product of extremely neglectful and/or poor parenting. Does this mean that NO 12-year-old can be a bad seed? No. However, many times, the troublemakers at that age have had a good model for such behavior at home.
