I think we all agree that the Tigers have been on a pretty sigificant roll since 2000. Whether it's been Miles or Saban, we have ascended to heights we have never before attained, at least not for this long a period of time. BUT, if we are going to use the measuring stick so many other storied schools use (USC, Notre Dame, etc.), then maybe it's time we start talking Hiesman trophy. Let me begin the discussion by suggesting that if Jamarcus Russell returns next year for his senior season, he should probably be on the short list for pre-season Hiesman favorites. (I recetly heard Jordy & crew saying this very same thing on the post-game radio show - I believe it was after the Alabama game). Besides Jamarcus, what do you think our chances are of recruiting/developing and - most importantly - supporting the Hiesman candidacy of one of our players? LSU - 45 ND - 16
I think you're right. Heismans typically only go to quaterbacks and running backs. Every once in a while a receiver or defensive player will take it home, but it is quite rare and usually requires a down year at the other positions (although the year Charles Woodson won it, he beat out Peyton Manning). So, you can basically rule out all of our defensive players and receivers (if Larry Fitzgerald couldn't win it, I don't know if anyone can). That leaves either a QB or a RB. Unless we drop the running back by committee approach (highly unlikely), all of our running backs are ruled out as well (although Keiland might have the talent if he were to get 25 carries a game). That leaves only the QB's. I like Flynn as much as the next guy, but he's not winning a Heisman--especially considering that his senior year will be his first chance at starting (this is assuming JR is gone). Perriloux seems to be our best and only option. We've heard all the stories of his high school greatness, but we don't really have any evidence that he will dominate in college. I think his chances would increase dramatically if he were given the starting job this year. (I'm not saying this is what is best for the team, only what gives us the best chance of having a Heisman winner. I think we'd all agree that the Heisman comes a very distant 2nd to :crystal: .)
Definitely, team first and if we receive individual awards along the way, so much the better! :thumb:
I saw Perrilloux play in the Fresno State game and when I saw Ryan throw the ball I couldn't help but ask myself "what the hell was that?". Was not impressed in the least (in regards to arm strength and mechanics). And he didn't look very fast running the ball either. I can see why he wasn't even #2 on the depth chart this season. He has a long way to go. Flynn will be a very good game manager next season should JR go pro (ala Matt Mauck). I think Miles will find a way to get Perrilloux in on some plays, in the same way Florida has used Tebow. At least I hope so. I really don't think Ryan can hold out an entire season yet again without seeing any meaningful action.
For a receiver to win it, he usually has to produce some jaw-dropping punt returns. Ex: Tim Brown, Desmond Howard. Randy Moss should have won it at Marhsall.
I kept wanting to see him in there myself. I was so happy when he got in against Fresno, I agree he didnt look too impressive. His passes werent too crisp, although one should have been caught. I was also susprised that he looked to have similar speed to Flynn, slightly quicker. I pictured him being similar to Young and Smith. I saw Perrilloux play a few times in high school. He was amazing. One time he rolled out on a full run with the D on his heels, and threw a beautiful spiral 60 yards, hitting a receiver who was well covered in stride! The receivered dropped the pass! He has a rocket arm, he tosses it 30-40 yards like its nothing. He ran like a RB in the open field, his power was amazing. It appeared the D would just bounce off of him. He was constantly breaking tackles. Perrilloux also had great speed. One game his parents were sitting behind me, they are some really nice people. His dad said he could probably toss it 80 yards, after seeing him throw 60 on a roll out I wouldnt doubt it. I guess this just goes to show how much better the competition is at the next level. How much quicker, faster, and bigger the difference is. I really do hope that he lives up to the hype. I think Miles may be unsure, or frears Perrilloux may transfer. Could be why he wanted Lee so bad in this years recruiting class?
The media decides who is going to win the Heisman and it has nothing to do with a player's performance over the course of the season. It has everything to do with who the media has been hyping and for how long. If McFadden comes back next year look for him to be the favorite.
If Perrilloux has the perception he isn't given a fair shake at the starting job this next offseason, or JR stays, I think Ryan will transfer.
Why does this keep getting brought up? It would make absolutely no sense for him to transfer. If Russel comes back, it would mean that RP would have to sit around for another year before he would get his shot. If he transfers he will still have to sit out for another year. Why not just stay where you are? At least he would have the oppertunity to play should JR or Flynn get hurt. And, he wouldn't have to learn a new offensive system like he would if he transferred. It just makes no sense. He may regret having come here, but he's not stupid enough to bail after waiting this long.
