I am going to try to explain what LSU football Means to me . I just lost my father to cancer at age 72 and before he passed he said "i guess i wont see LSU win another national title" . Sorry if i spell bad this is hard for me. I am looking at my dads LSU collectables ,, tcu and lsu flags form 3 to 2 game and the stories flood back to me.... How his father took him to the games by train form new orleans (yes the trains ran to the stadium long ago) and how after a lsu, tulane game lsu fans cut sugar cane stalks and there was a Big fight after the game...how lsu watered the field so "choo choo justice" coluldn't run against our Tigers.
I could tell stories for days about how the Bear lured john david Crow from LSU by having a priest tell the him The Lord wanted him for Bama... but this should tell you how my family feels about Lsu. My dad told this story often how he put me high up on a stool and said"jump i'll catch you and i jumped and he caught me.... then he put me back on the stool and said jump im a LSU fan and i'll catch you i jumped and he caught me..... then he put me on the stool and said jump im a green wave fan... i jumped and he let me fall on my face and stood over me and said NEVER TRUST A TULANE FAN......

Sorry to hear about your Dad. My Dad is the reason I'm an LSU fan as well. I've heard some great stories abou the New Orleans train to LSU games as well. My uncle tells the story of my great uncle who one night gave the signal to the conductor to get the train moving just as he could see a group of Tulane fans approaching to board. Much more detailed and funnier than I can tell it. Maybe it's true maybe it isn't but I choose to believe it is. Sounds like they had some great times back then.

Just as your father was able to witness LSU become national champions in 1958 I think you'll be able to witness them become national champions too. It's not far off. I can feel it.

    God bless and :geaux:!

I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad, xlmsports. I lost my Dad in June of 2000 so I know the pain you're going through. My
Dad never attended LSU but he was a huge fan. He took me to all the games when I was a little kid. He watched me play every game from grade school through high school. He was pumped up when I had a good game but he never said a negative word when I had a poor performance. I was pretty rebellious as a youth and we had our share of shouting matches but he was always there for me when I needed him even if I didn't deserve it.
In early June of 2000 my Dad had been in the hospital for almost 3 months. He had his ups and downs and there were periods of enormus despair and times of great hopefulness when he seemed to be on the road to recovery. The day that LSU played Stanford for the College World Series championship was one of his good days. We watched the game together in his hospital room. My Dad was pretty weak from the ordeal of his long period in the hospital and his illness but he really perked up and was excited to see the late inning comeback by the Tigers to win their 5th National Championship. The next day he began to drift in and out of a coma and he passed away a few days later. It was devistating for all of our family and even after 3 years I still don't think I'm over it but I'll always be thankful for those few hours we spent sharing the Tiger baseball win.

I am very sorry to hear about your dad, and I really dont mean to make light of the situation. That is pretty funny, though. Never trust a Tulane fan. :D

    Again, sorry for your loss.

My Paw-paw passed away back in '78, but he was a cadet at LSU in the'20s. He used to tell me about train trips down to Tulane, and how the cadets would pass out sticks and baseball bats for the fights afterwards.

My Dad graduated from the LSU forestry school in 1949. When I was growing up on the Gulf Coast, he and I would always watch whatever football game was on TV. My earliest recollections of football were watching the LSU highlight show on Sunday night on one of the New Orleans channels, the old black and white footage taken from high up in the press box, featuring a guy whose name I thought was "Jerry Snowball."
He took me to my first game in about 1966, LSU vs. Florida, the Gators being quarterbacked by that visor-wearing fellow.
LSU football was a joy we both shared, and my great regret was that my father died before I followed in his footsteps to LSU. I have his diploma and mine, and I guess one day I should have them framed together.
Last fall I took my son to his first LSU game at Virginia Tech. At age 18, he's about 6-5, 270, so he got a lot of attention from the LSU faithful. For a moment I had to stop and think that my Dad was somehow present in spirit.
I bet you will find that a lot of folks on this board were introduced to LSU football by a parent in the same way that you were, xlnsports, and that I was. We are truly blessed.
(In memory of Richard F. "Bud" Lewis, LSU 1949)

First of all sorry for your loss.

My dad was a high school football coach in North Louisiana when i was a little boy which was back in the 60's. He got the chance to take his team down on the train to play in south louisiana and they were going to go to the LSU game the next day. I think it was like 1966 or 67 and my brother got to go and i didnt. He was a year older and they said i could go another time. I cried and cried when i saw that train pull out .

For my consolation prize my mom took me to see the movie "bambi" . LSU game or bambi. I think you guys can figure who got the better end. I did get to go to other LSU games but i have never gotten over my brother getting to go to that game on the train with my dad's team and i got to see Bambi.

I am still in awe of the feeling i get when i am at an LSU game. There is just a feeling of everything being right with the world.
