1. Dude...not to be nitpicky or anything, but don't go talking about the ignorance of people in this state, when it's painfully obvious that you need to mix in Spellcheck. 2. Not all of us voted for Edwin Edwards. I NEVER voted for the scoundrel (ducked a bullet in 1991 by being on active duty in the Army, so I didn't have to choose between he and Duke). That having been said, he only became a convicted felon AFTER serving as Governor multiple times. There's nothing worse than somebody who moves somewhere else and then turns around and looks down his nose at the people back home.
Well, genius, if you truly want an answer to your questions about LSU/ULL..... Then go to the source of the damn problem. UL-Lafayette. Why are you so thick-headed as to not understand that LSU fans don't have any special hostility toward UL-Lafayette. We think they are ridiculous. I think that has been pointed out here several times but apparently you just want to continue with this assumption that somehow LSU is in control of this issue. LSU and LSU fans just don't really care with the exception of those fans who come from the Lafayette area of which you are one. You are assuming that LSU fans have some hatred of UL-Lafayette but the fact is that LSU fans don't care enough about UL-Lafayette to do much more than laugh at this kind of crap that you post in this thread. It's assumptions like yours which reveal the huge amount of envy and jealousy which comes from the UL-Lafayette side and not the other way around. UL-Lafayette is basicly a non-issue with LSU fans and that's the truth. Why should they be anything but? What have they ever done athleticly to LSU other than lose? UL-Lafayette is no more a concern to LSU than UL-Monroe is. Why can't you understand this? The bad blood if there truly is any is caused from the UL-Lafayette side. After all, it wouldn't hurt LSU at all to play UL-Lafayette or not. LSU gains nothing.
The USL people should be more concerned with their performance than their name or their image or hating LSU. I can call myself Boss of the World, but that won’t put me any closer to being that. (Which is my long term goal in life). I was at the Bulldog in Lafayette over x-mas and there was more OU gear in there than USL gear. They all went out and bought Sooner paraphernalia for crissakes. That is just plain weird. It’s a sickness. And as far as the guy in Dallas saying that LA is the laughing stock of the country, I think he is way off. I’ve been all over the country, (live in SC now) met people from everywhere, and when people hear I’m from south Louisiana the common reaction is “Damn, that’s cool.” I expect that reaction now. They all want to know about Cajuns & zydeco & New Orleans & mardi gras & crawfish & how great the LSU football atmosphere is. The reason is that south Louisiana is one of the few places left with a definable culture. 90% of the cities in this country are interchangeable. If you moved Indianapolis to Ohio or Philadelphia to Illinois or Norman to Nebraska would anyone even notice. South Louisiana has a positive reputation at least as far as the people and culture go. I wear an LSU hat out in Clemson and without fail some comes up to me and says “Are you from LSU? That’s awesome, I bet that was a cool place to go to school. Is it really like that on gamedays?” Yes, it is.
Please read the entire thread. People do respect our football and culture...They don't at all respect anything else. We are known for crooked polititians, back acedemics, and horrible roads. It doesn't mean we have to stay in this situation though.
This is useless to continue this discussion. The entire point is being missed here. To sum it all up: Instead of beating on each other, we should all be on the same side, Louisiana fans! We also need to continue the passion we have about football and culture into everything else we do: education, politics, economics, etc... I appreciate the non-hostile, non-name calling comments. Everyone have a great weekend, including you Stripes. God bless.
dallaslsufan, if your goal is to understand why the animosty exists, its just human nature. You're right - its not productive. We'd all be better off if everybody gathered around for a group hug, but it will never happen. In-state schools, and their respective fan bases, hate each other - like dogs and cats. This happens everywhere, not just in backwards Louisiana. Look at Alabama/Auburn, Ole Miss/Miss. St., Texas/Texas A&M, South Carolina/Clemson, USC/UCLA - you could go on forever with examples. The only reason that LSU/ULL isn't really a "rivalry" in the traditional sense, like the ones I just mentioned, is because ULL never wins and there's no legitimate competition, so its essentially one-sided. But anyway, my point is that while I think you are correct about the benefits of everybody pulling for all Louisiana schools, its hopelessly idealistic. Its just not how it works ... ever ... anywhere ... not just here. Resentment toward LSU from ULL fans is a fairly natural consequence of the two school's respective positions and not surprising. Neither is it surprising when LSU fans respond to that resentment with hatred, and general disdain, for ULL and its supporters. So, I'm sorry to be so pessimistic, but its not likely to change, its probably best not to get too worked up over it.
Let me just throw my .02 in before this post goes completely dead. This is why LSU fans are tired of Cajun Fans: 1. It all started with the name change thing. One day, Ray Authement got a wild hair up his ass and woke up and decided "You know what, I want to be recognized as a flagship in this state too..." Granted, this would not only make zero sense seeing that the ONE flagship this state does have is having problems getting from the state what it needs. Throw in two and forget it. 2. Cajun fans printing up bumper stickers in the 80's posting the scores and comparing the Cajuns to LSU in playing Ole Miss (or Bama, can't remember). It said something like..."Ole Miss 21 USL 19 LSU 17" or something to that effect, you get the idea though. 3. During the home games at LSU when the announcer starts reading off scores from games that day, and a Cajuns loss is announced, you get the same reaction as if he announced the score to a Utah State/Univ of Northern Colorado game. At ULL, when the announcer reads an LSU loss over the system, the crowd cheers louder than if they were to actually score a td in the game. 4. All the whining and bitching and moaning here in Lafayette from the editors of papers about LSU spirit during the Sugar Bowl. I wonder if the Tigers lost if the whining would have been converted to cheering? 5. Coach YGirourd's plaque being ripped off the wall at USL when she took the job at LSU. 6. Coach was fired from the football team when his son decided to go to LSU instead of USL. Do I need to go any further? How could any LSU fan not detest the few losers in Lafayette that will go to any length to put down LSU in an attempt to take the attention off their own shortcomings?
Why is it hard for a college graduate to spell politicians? or felon? Don't say that you were typing quickly, because you did it twice. I have several stories about usl's hatred of LSU. Don't wear LSU clothes on usl's campus. you'd be better off attending class naked. I was told that I shouldn't be allowed to attend school there because I had an LSU cap and shirt on. I told the idiot that if he wanted to pay for my school AND buy me usl clothes that I'd wear it, until then, shut it! Also, I was at Pete's on the strip (not the Keg, I think) when I noticed a current football player (on scholarship) wearing a Syracuse sweatshirt. I also saw Boulanger (baseball coach at the time) recruiting a kid from Northside, while Boulanger was wearing a Texas Longhorns cap!!! All this time, some people are worried about ME wearing an LSU cap! Also, I overheard a father telling his son that LSU was "scared to play us in football. Kevin Faulk is not that good". I also viewed a usl fan throw a bead in the face of the krewe of ragoo at the regionals in lafayette. when the cajuns were up early, they were putting it on the krewe, when lsu took the lead and won, they couldn't take it. The guy that threw the beads stood by me most of the game. After he threw the beads at the krewe, he said that he threw it at them to show them to respect us, or something to that effect.
Another good post. That is what I wanted to here. Valid reasons...Not emotional crap and name calling. I agree with you on all of your points. I have been in ULL games where this has occured. LSU loss and ULL fans cheer....But this has not been the case lately. I think this has kind of died out....
