I am an O-State alum, and have been watching your forums the last couple days to see what you guys have to say about our Coach. We do not want him to leave as he has been instrumental in rebuilding what was one of the worst programs in the NCAA and in the new $115 million stadium renovation underway. You guys haven't said much about Les Miles, mostly Petrino. But up here all we here is that our coach has been offered the LSU job, and he will announce that he is taking it after the Alamo Bowl tonight. I am just curious as to what you guys are hearing down there and who do you want as your next coach.
I don't think Miles has been offered the job and that more candidates are yet to be inteviewed. No disrespect intended but I think we can do better than Miles.
If not for competing with Stoops and Oklahoma, if OSU was the flagship school in the state, he would probably do a lot better than what he's actually accomplished thus far. Similar to the situation Saban had at MSU prior to coming to Baton Rouge. He's intriguing, but I think he's at the point to be offered a job here (i.e. doesn't sound like an interview between him and LSU is moving developing quick enough)
Solid coach. Has slim pickings for recruiting(up against OU, UT, aTm, TX Tech and others) and still puts up the wins. Given the right situation he could post more wins. A little conservative on offense, but has some impressive wins. I wouldn't mind seeing him in purple and gold. Dallas radio(local ESPN guy) said yesterday he's more in the mix than what is being reported. I'd say he's 2 or 3 on the list though.
Les Miles has beaten OU twice in his career, and almost a 3rd time this year. He can win the big games. That's the biggest plus for him. This is like Michigan St. vs. Michigan. The MSUs and OSUs of this world can only accomplish so much. So that needs to be taken into perspective as well.
Forget all the "done-deal", "offer on the table" rumors. We have been putting up with that crap for the last 5 years with Saban and the NFL. We havent even interviewed everyone. I know he has a 28-20 record after taking over a pretty bad OSU team in 2001. They won, what, 3 games in 2000? I think he has done a pretty good job up there, but I dont know what kind of fit he would be for LSU. At the same time, I didnt think Saban was a very good fit either, and I think we are all happy with how that turned out (championships, I mean). Saban went 35-24-1 in his 5 years at MSU, which is a 58.3 win percentage compared to a 58.3 win percentage for Miles. I think they are a lot more similar than people may think. They both had to compete against the Goliath of their state, Michigan and Oklahoma, respectively. They both play in a tough conference, and OSU in a pretty tough division. I think Louisiana would be much easier to recruit than both Oklahoma and Michigan. The only thing that really bothers me about Les Miles is his defenses. OSU was 73rd in the nation this year in total defense, and we have gotten a little partial to perennial top 5 defenses.
OU fans posted some links to make fun of Miles, and I actually liked him more after watching. I really like his intensity, but I am not sure of him as a whole.
actually Miles was the first name LSU discussed this past Saturday when the Saban bidding was going down. He was reportedly all but signed, like now with petrino, Nutt and somewhere butch davis can fit in here as well. personally, i like the guy and given the fact he is barely mentioned lately lends credence to him as a probably candidate more than likely. Outside of the top-tier Tedford/Del Rio/Ferentz, Miles has to be in that next group. Seems solid and though I cant watch those videos currently, I do know he is a loon on the sidelines during games as Ive witnessed on tv. is this guy all there or is he a true basket-case?
