What are your wishes for JR on draft day?

  1. Number 1, no matter what. It's too much of an honor to pass on.

Personally I'm torn. I love the guy, I think he'll be a great pro QB (better than Quinn but I think they'll both be good QBs given the right atmosphere to develop in).

It would be awesome to see our Tiger go NUMBER FREAKING ONE in the draft. I know Oakland isn't some perennially awful franchise like the Cardinals or anything but I do worry that the atmosphere there could drag him down.

Part of me wonders whether it would be better for him to get passed on by Oakland and picked up by a team that isn't in QUITE as much disarray as the Raiders. After all, if he doesn't go first but goes on to have a great career at another place due to better surroundings, not being picked 1st would be just a minor footnote in his football life. Of course he would miss out on some money but I'm sure he'll be getting PLENTY of green no matter what.

So basically, I'd love to see him go #1, would fill me with immense pride to see one of our own be picked first among every other collegiate athlete that wants to go pro, but I'd hate to see the Raiders squander his talent or worse, ruin his career (I really think there have been great players out there that may have gone on on to super star careers but were just mishandled in their first few formative years in the pros).

I guess your opinion depends on whether or not you think the Raiders will turn it around and whether they have the coaching to mold JR and tap his potential.

So, do yall want to see him go #1 no matter what or think he'll be better off with a different organization? I haven't looked at any projections, if he were to fall from #1 who do the Mel Kipers of the world think he'll end up with?

I know this is a big "what if" topic but it's the only thing that keeps me going in the off season.

Only thing that immediately comes to mind is Mario Williams. Clearly the process is/has become a bit overrated.

I appreciate the pride aspect that goes along with being the #1 pick. I was stunned last year when Reggie didn't go first. But he landed in the right place in a state that apparently needed him and that he needed as well.

I hope JaMarcus goes to the best place for him. I'm not sure if it's with the Raiders or not. I despise Al Davis and it's been years since any player has benefitted from that organization. Lane Kiffin is a no nonsense, my way or the highway kind of coach. If that's the environment JaMarcus is comfortable with, then the Raiders might be a good place.

I think the perfect scenario would be that Russell gets drafted as no. 1 but traded to the Packers. Not that I like the Packers, but Favre is going to play his last season, Russell will learn a lot from a great QB like Favre in one year, then be a starter the next.

I think he cant fall behind no. 3. The Browns owner almost said it, that he wont pass on a guy like JaMarcus.

sounds like an Eli Manning situation. Do you mean drafted and then immediately traded on draft day before the Packers pick? How would a deal like that work? I forgot the particulars of the Eli Manning deal.

Eli refused to play for the Chargers. He and daddy let that be known in advance of the draft. The Chargers drafted him anyway and then subsequently traded him to the Giants for Phillip Rivers and 3 other draft choices. At the draft ceremony, he wouldn't put on the hat or hold up the Charger jersey. On the one hand, the Chargers had been unsuccessful in getting his agent to the table for discussion for well over 3 weeks but Eli didn't do himself any favors with that attitude.

Yep and the Chargers used one of those draft picks to get Shawne Merriman, so the joke was on Eli, that whiny lil....anyways i hope JR goes #1 because I would like to see him get as much playing time as possible because I'm still pumped about how he played last season and im hoping it carries over and he has a vince young like year in terms of winning...

Actually, I meant like the Raiders trade down with the Packers for the 1st pick, so then the Packers would get him as the no. 1. He gets the no. 1 pick and the good franchise pick.

Look at the chargers and look at the giants. Looks like he made a poor choice (at least for now) and the NY media is eating him up (in a bad way). Why would the Giants trade so much for a guy they knew the Chargers would be desperately trying to ship anyway? Seems like they could have avoided the embarrassing draft day situation for all parties involved if they had just traded the picks prior to the draft so that the Giants picked first. I remember Archie being involved, that was very "un-manning like". I know he felt uncomfortable about doing it but his desire to see his son succeed was too much to stop him. I'm pretty sure he was scared that his son would wind up with a career like his (being held back, at the time by a completely inept Saints organization). I understand how a father would feel that way. It just seems like it was bad PR for what is/was considered an almost untarnished NFL family image. I know the chargers weren't looking so hot then but the league is so different from back in Archie's day (free agency, salary cap, tv revenue sharing, etc..) that if I were him I'd almost prefer my son NOT play in NYC where once the media latches on to you they are relentless.

Anyway, sorry to hijack my own thread... please return to the regularly scheduled JR discussion.

Re: I hope the Raiders don't pick Jamarcus

I wouldn't wish that anyone. JR is a stud QB and that would be a death sentence for his (or any other QB) development as a NFL QB. That goes the same for my boy All-Day.
