true. this is a big news story, the killing of an american diplomat. and it important that we interpret it correctly. we have to remember to never condemn free speech and to understand the line between words and violence. this is not a flag waving partisan abortion gay rights gun control issue, this is an actual issue of import.

No one has condemned free speech or the right for this asshole to make an inflammatory film. That is your straw man. What has been condemned is the message of a particular film. These freely expresed films have no special protection against being criticized. How absurd.
I think a fair claim can be made that BHO has weakened the respect the Middle East holds for the US. He is seen as weak and vacillating by Arab leaders and most of all not lived up to the hype and hope generated in that region by his election. He dumped Hosni Mubarak in Egypt but did nothing about Iran or Syria (as seen in public), backed a dictator in Yemen and was dragged kicking and screaming into Libiya. There is no clear message in either words or action in this administration. He has alienated our best allies (Israel and Saudi Arabia) by both word and deed. In a part of the world where fear and certainity of response leads to respect we have lost so much from even W's place that actions such as this are happening. To be sure the dynamic in the middle east is so disfunctional there will be chaos for years perhaps decades before things sort out. The local population has been held in stasis for centuries (by Turks, other Arabs, Eurpoeans and most recently their own rulers) so that religous and tribal factions are unchanged from the 12th century. At some time this stasis had to break and allow the population to evolve to a more modern society. That may be happening now. It is a shame they have oil and the world needs it or we could let them find their own way. To survive in this chaos we need to be tough and clear about what is important. this doesn't mean we should impose our will or invade to keep things quiet. That would be wrong. What we do need to do is set conditions that are important to us and enforce them while being available to help as they ask and need. What Romney did after and seems to be continuing, is doing nothing to help and shows to me he isn't equipped to be president. Unfortunately BHO has had 3 years to prove it and I think his lack of leadership is almost as bad. The lack of respect he and the country have in the region and proves his unfitness as well.
