I feel your son's pain. I war with myself all of the time over the private vs. public school debate. I am a public school teacher, and have been for all but 2 years of my 16 years, and my daughter attends public school. I truly believe that good public schools are the bedrock of a good community, but the trends in public education really concern me. The population at the school where I currently teach (and have for the past 11 years) is changing, and it's not a good change. Some children are inherently more difficult to teach than others. My daughter's school is but 5 miles from this school, and is in the same district, but the difference between the student bodies is rather dramatic. Throwing more money at education will not make it better. Having teachers actually have imput in how to improve it, though, would be a step in the right direction.
I went to public school in a small rural community. We toed the line because we were afraid that we'd get sent to the Principal's office and shuddered at the thought of our parents finding out we were giving the teachers trouble. That's the difference between then and now. Money won't do a damn thing to correct those problems.
Tie behavior and some level of academics to welfare assistance. Kid screws up, no check. Obviously can't be cut and dry in every case cause some kids do try and not only poor kids fit the bill but one thing for sure, their is a direct correlation tween "At risk" population and behvaioral problems in schools.
I've always felt that government employees losing their jobs is one of the best things that can happen to this country. Welcome back to the private sector. Time to actually contribute something to society.
"Corzine said his 2009 budget .... accommodates $550 million in additional school aid that was approved by the Legislature last month." plus, you know that you never can tell from media reports if a cut is a cut or just a decrease of an increase.
That's what I thought SF would go after. Sarchasm -- The gulf between sarcastic wit and those who do not get it.
