At one point in the 60's we had Rice, A&M, and Tulane on the schedule every year. Now we have none of the three and are playing ULL and Utah State every year. It is ashame we don't play any one of those teams anymore. I mean I wan't to play A&M every year but it looks like it will not happen. If we can't play A&M lets bring back the Tulane rivaly and play for The Rag. I mean it was a huge rivaly back in the day and is really the only other LA school that can put up really any kind of fight. I think we had them on the schedule in 2005 in the Superdome but sadly it is now off the schedule. We seem to be running from our past. I know the A&M thing is out of our hands but the Tulane thing is right there. Many schools have a State rival they play every year.
Georgia-Georgia Tech, UT-A&M, SC-Clemson, and Florida-FSU to name a few. If we started the rival back up with Tulane there would be a buzz around the game through out the state. I mean it is about state pride, which school is better. Us kicking the crap out of Tulane would prove to them we are king of Louisiana.

  2. I agree with the Tulane thing, we should be playing them every year (while they are still in 1A.) I'm glad we don't play A&M though, I don't see much benefit to either program. Plus they are a bunch of whiners.

In the 60s LSU only played 5 SEC games a year so there was plenty of room on the schedule for rivalry opponents, creampuffs and a big name home and home out of conference opponent. Now that we play 8 SEC games a year there is only room on the schedule for a name home and home series and a couple of creampuff tuneup games. I wouldn't mind seeing the Tigers play Tulane in the Dome every now and then but if they do LSU should get the lions share of the revenue since the seats would be filled by a majority of LSU fans.

I wouldn't mind playing Tulane every year but, and call me crazy, I think the 2nd best team in the state is La Tech. Not sure if its feasible to play them every year though.

  5. yeh, the Tulane game would probably be better revenue-wise. I do agree that most of the time La Tech has the better team.

I think a rivalry could get started with La Tech.

I don't think any game is feasible money wise. No matter who we schedule, we'll be losing money when we have to go to their stadium. And that is the only way that a rival will accept playing us every year, playing at their stadium in alternating years.

So even if we sell 3,000 more tickets for a game against Big Name U than we would against Creampuff State. The next year we'll lose a whole home game's revenue when we go to their stadium. I can't see LSU agreeing to do that unless another viable source of income is found in the athletic budget.

I'd play Tulane every year....re-instate the "Battle for the Rag" and do away with these crap teams like Western Illinois, Western Carolina, and Troy St.

Rotating between La Tech, ULM and ULL make sense in terms of in-state supremecy. I mean, not that we should worry, but it keeps people from those schools from saying that "LSU is dodging us" ...similar to what Tech said when they were winning, and what ULL was saying back in the early to mid '90's.

Now, it's a "put up, or shut up"....and we've been shutting them up...and I like it!

As long as LSU plays 7 home games every year the financial picture will stay the same. With 4 SEC home games that still leaves LSU with room to work in some Big Name U home and Home series every year and still keep the 7 home games. Lets face it. LSU dosen't have a natural rival. Tulane was a natural rival years ago but their program went into the toilet. In state schools like USL and LA Tech would love to become big rivals with LSU but that will never happen unless one of them elevates their program above the low mid major level and builds a stadium big enough to be worthy of hosting the Tigers in.
