Saw this on another board and thought it was interesting. 2. Leaping (Rule 9-1-2-q) Change: It is a personal foul if a defensive player who runs foward and leaps in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or kick try lands on any player. It is not a foul if the leaping player was lined up within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped. Rationale: Clarification that a leaping player is guilty of a foul if the player lands on any other player.
while it might be a new revision to the old rule.....with this new revision any LB that jumps and lands on another player will still be called for the penalty......It is impossible for a LB that is lining up behind the DL to get within 1 yd of the line of scrimmage
Yeah I remember reading somewhere that Saban had pushed for that rule to be changed because of the Aub. game.
Saban had argued against this rule prior to the game, before it passed. Unless I'm misreading it - this is the exact rule that hurt us. An LB landing on another player (even his own team mate) is guilty of a foul. edit: (re-reading now I guess maybe the "within one yard" clause is the change?)
It looks like this is a clarification of the old rule & that now you have to run up & land on someone in order for it to be a foul. But like geauxscott said, that one yard rule is kind of flimsy because they'd most likely be further than 1 yard away whether they are running up or not. My guess is that this rule will be interpreted(sp?) to just include running forward making it a foul. In that case, there wouldn't have been a flag thrown in the AU game (supposedly, but then again it should never have been thrown in the first place) & we would have gone in to overtime with Auburn - beating them & going on to beat Tennessee in the SECCG & getting our 2nd strait Sugar Bowl appearance/win. Atleast, that's how this LSU fan sees it... :hihi:
Don't know when it was changed, but it's a stupid rule. This is tackle football, not 2 hand touch. No jumping and falling on someone... No hitting with your helmet... No touching the QB when attempting a pass... No hitting above the waist... No hitting below the waist... I'm thinking we should just put flags on the players. Bunch of pansies :hihi:
I've only seen the leaping call twice in my life...The first was a colts and tampa bay monday night football game and the other was LSU/ Auburn
