I was watching my tape of the Sugar Bowl (again) and I couldn't stop thinking about the first play from scrimmage. Justin Vincent came extremely close to an 80 yard TD run to start the defeat of OU. He was caught from behind by Derrick Strait (I believe). I noticed that Justin turned a couple of time to see if anyone was gaining on him. If he doesn't take that glance or if he had changed his angle towards the end zone just a bit then he has the touchdown. Why bring this up ? I'm not denigrating Justin. His talent is amazing. I don't want to make it sound like "he should have done this" because he did nothing "wrong" on the play. but if if if if if if if if HE SCORES Then IMO THAT play supplants Billy Cannon's 89 yard punt return against Ole Miss in 1959 as THE GREATEST PLAY in LSU Football history. People name their kids after him in La. for years and he becomes immortal. It's the play everyone talks about for the next 45 years. As popular as he is now, it would have been tenfold if he had scored . As it turned out the Tigers turned it over on the goal line, got it back and Skyler takes it in. Just a thought !! GO TIGERS !!
He would have also scored on the second long run against Georgia in the fourth quarter if he goes to the left side of Michael Clayton.
Strait catches JV from behind even if JV had another leg to help out. Brilliant run. And the heisman pose later in the game is indicative of things yet to come.
I agree that Strait catches him no matter what. However 95% of the DB'S would not have caught him had he not looked back and made a simple cut. Don't expect him to make that kind of mistake next year. I just have to say this at the risk of getting reamed by you guys. Strait was absolutley amazing on that play. It was a classic example of a PLAYER performing above his limits when he is challenged. Just my opinion.
Ream who? Strait is an amazing player and true to form, he was amzing that whole game. I've watched that game 3 times this week (my wife says I have problem) and Strait is all over the place.
JV slows down after 30-40 yards. He turns his head when tires out and slows down to see if he is being caught and if he can dodge a guy or two. He needs to work on distance running in the offseason. If you go look at the tape again he was outpacing them all and then after about 35 yards he slowed down a lot and they started catching up. Strait is a very fast guy though, who may have caught him even if he had enough gas to take it to the bank at top speed, a 5'9" 190 CB should be faster than a RB.
I wouldn't think he would be tired on the first play of the game. No doubt that Strait is faster than Vincent but he was far enough ahead that if he hadn't kept trying to look behind he might have scored and even if he hadn't he would have gotten the ball closer to the goal line by several yards and maybe the play that Mauck fumbled on would never have been run because the Tigers would have already scored. maybe, maybe, maybe -- if, if , if - woulda, shoulda, coulda The game has been over for 2 weeks and Vincent'ts team is the National Champs and Strait's team is not.
Strait catches him no matter what? Did you see how he had to leap and BARELY caught the back of his shoe? He caught him, but not as easy as some of you seem to think.
Yes, I noticed that too... Instead of avoiding the defender he kind of ran right into him. Although it was a good run and we already had the game in hand...It should of been 6. And Furcal after running 40 yards you'd be tired too!
