Folks, you can call me pessimistic, cynical...whatever you want, but the names being tossed around as candidates scares the crap out of me. Let's take a look at the names, none of which give me the POP that I think LSU needs. Butch Davis - not interested, why...apparently there maybe some truth to the rumor of the nervous breakdown. Bobby Petrino - has had success at Louisville. Concerns over his involvement in the near coups de etat at Auburn with his old boss Tubby. Funny how the AD and Pres at AU took the fall - hardly ever see that happening.:dis: Houstn Nutt - to me he's the Dale Brown of college football. Plus his players could fill in a season's worth of shows on COPS. Like Gerry DiNardo all over again. Jack Del Rio - I liked Del Rio as a player and now as a coach, but never having recruited and has been more of an NFL guy than anything associated with college is a big concern. Les Miles - Don't know too much about him except that I watched his team blow a huge lead in the fourth quarter and eventually lose to a Louisiana Tech team that LSU had 49-0 at halftime. Like I've written in other posts, I think LSU needs someone with POP, and it really scares me to think LSU has regressed to asking to talk to the likes of Houston Nutt. Does anyone remember that fact that LSU just pounded Arkansas? But, like Peter Finney of the Times-Picayune wrote the other day it's all about timing. Spurrier might have been in the running had Saban decided to leave earlier, you just never know. To me this just happens to be one of those years where there really aren't any great coaching candidates. I orginally believed that Skip would do a fantastic job in finding a coach, and he still might, but my confidence is starting to wane just a bit. :lsug: :geaux:
I'm also concerned. I think things will work out to the best, thought. I have all the faith in the world in Skip to make the right choice. How about this as a hypothetical -- 3 years or so from now, Nick decides the NFL is not for him, and he wants to return to the college ranks -- could there be a return engagement for him at LSU?
Yeah, I thought we were going to get Bear Bryant or Knute Rockne but Skip said something about them being dead. All these candidates are horrible just like that Michigan State coach. You know the one we beat in the Independence Bowl. The one that lost most of his bowl games and never one the Big Ten. The one whose staff didn't follow him to LSU. Yeah, he had all kinds of negatives and that didn't work out at all. We need that candidate that no one has ever said anything negative about. The one that nobody could criticize if we hire him. Who is that again? If you know, email Skip.
I hope not because that would mean LSU... would have had some bad years during those 3 years in order for there to be a vacancy for him to come back. I love Nick Saban but I don't want to sacrifice the program for one person.
Saban will never come back, To much pride in him to come back with his tails between his legs if he fails in the NFL.. WOnt happen. I agree with most of what you said, however who do suggest has pop that LSU has a legitimate shot at. Yes there are people like Stoops, but seriously if we want to hire a man who is a current head coach, who is out there ??? I would take Petrino and see what he can do, Nutt sickens me to think about it. Tubs, thank god neither he nor LSU had ANY interest in each other. I have faith is doing the best he can, and I am sure he is interviewing all these guys to get a lay of the land. We can only hope the Sexton is not helping..
I agree. None of the coaches are a "Surething". Only Stoops and Carroll have proven they can compete year after year for a MNC. Whoever we get there will be some if's. Remember there were if's about Saban also.
You want someone with POP? What the hell is POP? Ok, well if you don't like who Skip is interviewing, then who the hell do you want?
Starting to get concerned Speaking for myself, I admit that I am judging potential candidates based upon gut feelings and quick snapshot impressions. Accepting Houston as LSU's next coach would be a tough nut to crack. When I hear his name, the first thought that comes to mind is that of a buffoon on the sidelines. However, when you objectively look at his record at Arkansas, it's fairly impressive, that is, before this year. He took them to a string of big bowl games and a/c to their website had the best record of any SEC West team from 98-02. Still, I don't think he'd be a good fit here. He seems to be an enthusiastic, emotional motivator, and I think the reason it works at Arkansas is b/c that is his alma mater and he genuinely believes the Arkansas rah-rah stuff. Would it work in BR?? I know absolutely nothing about Miles, so shouldn't comment. My first reaction which has no basis is that he sounds like the second coming of Curley Hallman. IMHO, if this is the hand we're dealt (Nutt, Petrino, Miles, or elevate Jimbo) then I think Petrino would clearly be the best hire. IF Del Rio really is interested (and I've read nothing indicating to me that he is), then, it would be a tough decision between Petrino and Del Rio. I'd be happy with either of them.:geaux:
My only concern is the BOS. If they meddle is this thing than we could have a terrible hire. Let Skip do his job and we are fine. There is a lack of viable top notch candidates but if we pluck a diamond in the rough like we did Saban, all is made for love! We just need to find him.
For some reason I do not think that we are getting the whole story, and I was expecting a lot more leaks than we are getting. There is a lot of rambling about coaches wanting to keep their involvment out of the public eye until next week and I hope that that is true, because if Skip's master list only has four names on it, then I will be very depressed. However, I have faith in Skip. He is a business man, and I believe is very competent to do a good job. I think that he runs a very tight ship, and would not be surprised to learn that he was able to put the clamps on the loose lips in the administration.
