Since 1978 until this year, USC fans have claimed that the AP title is bogus. Here is the proof: Back in 78 USC had one loss. Alabama had one loss. The thing was that USC beat Alabama in AL by double digits. Despite this and having the same record, the AP voted Alabama #1 and USC won the Coach's Poll. So, the USC fans want to have it both ways. Either you say you're 2003 co-champs and relinquish your claims to the 78 title. Or say you're 1978 national champs and relinquish your claim to the 2003 co-title. Oh, and one AP voting genius voted LSU #3 in the final poll. Some poll!
I think Alabama won the AP poll that year, and USC won the UPI poll (that's what the coaches poll was called then).
