UW president gets $100,000 plus pay raise

    Associated Press

SEATTLE - The Board of Regents wants to make sure that University of Washington president Mark Emmert stays put.

"He's one of the top performing presidents - public or private - in the U.S.," UW board member Sally Jewell told The Seattle Times. "We wanted him to stick around."

On Thursday, Emmert received an annual pay raise of more than $100,000. The Board of Regents approved a new yearly compensation package that totals $718,700, up 17 percent, for Emmert.

His raise includes a base pay of $518,700 and deferred compensation of $200,000. It's retroactive to Sept. 1.

Emmert ranks among the highest-paid public university presidents in the nation. He became the UW's 30th president effective June 14, 2004, after serving as the chancellor of Louisiana State University from April 1999 to June 2004.

Jewell said many people throughout the state feel better about the UW than before Emmert took over.

Most of the raise comes in the form of deferred compensation. Under terms Emmert agreed to when he joined the UW, the first $600,000 in deferred compensation will become available to him should he remain at the UW until 2009.

Jewell said that deferring the money will give Emmert incentive to remain at UW. She said his compensation before Thursday's raise was "not a great retirement plan."

Before going to , Emmert served five years as chancellor and provost of the University of Connecticut. Previous to that, he was provost and vice president for academic affairs at Montana State University and held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Colorado.

Emmert is a 1975 graduate of the UW, where he majored in political science. and is a native of Fife.

The fact that he is a native of Washington as well as a UW alum effectively prevented us from retaining his services.

Sad for us, good for UW in general.

Great, you can have him back!

My daughter goes to UW and they take back all the private scholarship money she won as a high school senior by reducing her "full academic scholarship to UW". It would have been better if she didn't win ANY private scholarships.

BTW, who in hell would offer a more lucrative package necessary to hire Emmert away from the University of Washington? Answer: King County Democratic Party "How To Steal a Governor's Election" Campaign Committee. I almost forgot he majored in Political Science at UW. :angryfire

BTW2, both current women govs in Washington state (Gregoire) and Louisiana (Blanco) just received their grade of "F" by the Cato Institute. Hell I can't win for losing; leave La for Wa and still get screwed!
