There are 12 internet nameservers in the world that validate domain names, dns changes and route all internet traffic. All of these are located within the USA. If the UN and the rest of the third world don't like that they can start their own internet from scratch. No matter whether a website is hosted in China .cn. Russia .ru or Mexico .mx it dosen't exist on the internet unless the nameservers update the sites dns on a continual basis. For example a website hosted in China might have a domain name like moogoogaipan.cn but the real unique internet address would be something like 61.34.121.211 If the nameservers located here in the USA don't recognize 61.34.121.211 then moogoogaipan.cn will not be able to be found from anywhere in the world. The internet is an American creation (nothing to do with Al Gore) dating back to what was called the Arpanet, a system set up to enable govenment agencies and academics to communicate through what is now known as email. Since the internet has become a worldwide tool as America's gift to the rest of the world there should be no reason for America to relinquish absolute sovereignty over the internets control and maintenance.
the UN can't control the "internet" because the "internet" is not a thing, it is a collection of things - most of which are contained in the USA. It would be like trying to herd cats. Don't worry - they may try, but it will never come to pass because there are too many ways around it.
The UN can't control the internet because they can't even control anything they do. They can't even do a job in a 3rd world country so how are they going to control a country like America? Good Luck to the UN Flunkies
moogoogaipan.cu??? LOL. Boggles the mind to think of where we are now compared to "Watson! Come in here! I need you!" If Alexander Graham Bell had any idea that he'd started all this with his little invention, he'd probably want to still be alive today to reap the benefits. Satellite links, cellular technologies, and the internet. What a time to be alive!!! Imagine trying to explain the internet and what it is to someone who lived only 50 years ago. The UN can go fornicate with themselves. They should have control over the internet just as well as they have control over their member nations.
