Man, what happened here? I know it's been brought up before about him going to Baylor but I didn't know he was this well thought of..........another one gets away. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/basketball/2006-02-16-demond-carter_x.htm
Apparently we never offered, never seriously recruited him. Brady put all our eggs in the DJ Augustin basket and then Katrina came along and swept them away. It's not really Brady's fault that DJ got away, but he does bear blame for not having his bases covered in that event -- especially since early on, DJ was a big ACC lean.
Don't let Tweety's numbers fool you. He's class C. Sure, he can play, but it's not like Duke wanted him. Should a recruiter have a backup in the event that a prospect is forced out of his home town? I hardly think that's reasonable.
I'm sorry, but you're simply misinformed. From the article: Yes. Considering it was widely known that, before Katrina, DJ wanted to go to North Carolina until they signed a different point guard... and LSU was #2 even then.... it is a recruiting failure to not have a backup. You are apologizing to a fault in this instance.
He played Oak Hill and turned in 14 points...Sure, that's not awesome by any means but Oak Hill is the elite of HS basketball. He looks like a pure shooter...That's a lot of 3's. Isn't that what LSU needs right now?
you are right its exactly what lsu needs right now. get up off your knees sabanfan bradys done with you. this is a recruiting failure and is nothing new for brady. cut the bait skip cut the bait. redelephant ask the blonde in your sig if she wants a link of boudin?
Good article. Thanks for posting. For the record, we should dissect this a little. I'll be the first to say that I'm disappointed LSU lost out on BOTH of the best PGs in the state this year, and would have been happy to land either. But, I've been following this recruiting since before last summer, and in their junior years, DJ and Demond both listed interest in LSU (I want to say that Demond earlier on had shy-ed away from LSU). LSU probably DID try to recruit both players, but you always get into a little bit of a dance, when you try to recruit two good players in the same spot, as focal as PG. DJ became a lean towards LSU, and I think the staff did prefer DJ for various reasons--and so you focus on the lead guy. That's enough to push a player to another school (much like Lawson's recruitment at UNC pushed DJ away from them)--it doesn't hurt that another NO player, Tim Bush, left LSU to go to Baylor and the new coach at Baylor (Drew) is a pretty young, well respect basketball guy. DJ was going to sign with LSU, and it may not have ever been an issue losing out on Demond, but Katrina relocated his entire family to Houston. You can't have a "contingency" plan to go back and get Demond, b/c he committed so early. So, it's a bit of bad luck. Recruiting in bball is a little more sensitive that fball, b/c you typically don't have multiple schollies for various positions. There was no way we were going to sign 2 PGs this year. Perhaps Brady and Butch could have cast the net wider and had other candidates in the pipeline, but the timing of Katrina was pretty detrimental. In any case, I'd say that I hope Demond does well. He does seem like a nice kid. I think he'll find it tough going at Baylor... a practice squad for the rest of the Big 12. Just watched them get creamed by UTexas the other night by 30+, and they also had a smallish PG running the show. Tim Bush got a few minutes but didn't do much. Demond (like any other 5'9" PG) will have some serious adjusting to do. FWIW, we have to remember that we got Terry Martin Jr., who played PG in high school, and is a 6'5"ish kid. We'll be alright in the backcourt next year... the key is who can we sign in '07! :geauxtige
I'm not sure there was ever an instance where "DJ was definitely going to sign with LSU". We were always #2 on his list. With that in mind, it seems like losing Demond Carter is a recruiting failure for LSU. If LSU was that high up on DJ's list, moving to Houston wouldn't have swayed him any (it's about the same distance from BR as Austin) I'm not quite sold on him just yet, because he was somewhat of a malcontent over at TTU. It's always exciting to land a D-1 transfer, though; which is why I was quite interested when he came. I thought he would go to ULM due to "big-fish-in-small-pond" local trends as well as the driving distance issue from Monroe. It will be interesting to see what he can provide next year at the PG position when he comes in January.
I don't think I ever said DJ was definitely going to sign with LSU, but he publicly has admitted that he was "leaning" towards LSU before Katrina, and that Katrina affected his decision. LSU I believe was #1 for some time, sort of pre-Katrina and before he visited Texas, although I know that it was a very tight race between UNC, Texas and LSU. As for Demond, please note that Demond committed to the Baylor in the FALL of 2004 (committed in late November of 2004). In other words, he had his mind up pretty early (fall of his junior year). You can call LSU's missing out on Demond a "failure" if you want, but I think there was pretty much little chance that we were going to sign him from the beginning when we were already recruiting DJ as a sophomore and who knows if Demond was ever THAT receptive to LSU. I think if you want to say it's a "failure" that kids like Demond or LaDarius Dunn (the latest top ranked PG of LA to sign to play with an out of state school ... Baylor) aren't even giving LSU an honest shot before committing elsewhere, then perhaps that's an issue that's worth debating and exploring. I just don't think there was a lot LSU could do in this instance. I'm not going to proclaim Terry a "malcontent", especially since I don't know the real reason he left... other than he missed home. I assume you're basing this statement on stuff posted on this board. FWIW, Texas Tech is playing HORRIBLY right now... I don't think they're happy to see a productive player leave. Note that Terry was a top 60 high school kid coming out his Sr. year (and higher than Demond--who is ranked by some as the 15th to 20th best PG in his class), and averaged almost a triple double. Obviously, I'll wait and see as you will how good Martin is, but I think on paper, losing out on Demond but picking up Martin is something I'll take at this stage. Now... I'm more pissed off that we don't seem to be getting any love from Josh White who's a good PG at local CLA and is rumored also to be heading to the Big 12 (brother of Q.White of Oklahoma)... That's one I hope we can get turned around... :geauxtige Oklahoma, who is arguably the second best Big 12 team just lost to Colorado... C'Mon! Even a down SEC is rated higher than the Big 12 right now...:bball: :geauxtige :hihi:
