My top 5 has pretty much already been mentioned.

I have to add a few more:

    TV:
    - Dwight Shrute - The Office
    - Norm - Cheers
    - Kramer - already mentioned but have to again because he was awesome

    Movies:
    - Dr. Gonzo (although supposed to be a real person) - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    - Frank the Tank Ricard - Old School
    - Sidnee Deane - White Men Can't Jump

    TV:
James Arness as Matt Dillon - Gunsmoke, longest running TV show ever
Larry Hagman as JR Ewing, "Dallas"

    Movies:
Clint Eastwood - Spagetti Westerns, Fist Full of Dollars, Few Dollars More, Good Bad and Ugly, still fun to watch.

I gotta go with LSUtiger327 with Ari from Entourage. What a great character.

    Movies:
I also gotta agree with Supafan. Clark W. Griswald is the chit!

But, ya'll seem to be forgetting:

Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the
North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor,
Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Been trying to narrow down the tv side. Too hard to do, but my favorite current tv character has to be Crabman.

I concur the entire Earl cast would make up my top 5 of favorites if my list were limited to shows in production.

    It would go

    Randy
    Jamie Presley
    Crabman
    Earl
    Earl's Dad

    limited to shows in production:

    sayeed from lost
    crabman
    catalina from earl (too hot)
moe from the simpsons (in my mind the same show i liked is no longer in production)
dr house (although he is less interesting in newer episodes)
    turtle

i like every person on mythbusters, but they arent characters.
