I haven't been in the student section in about a decade. Songs from the band continue to evolve along with the student section's chants, etc. Obviously we're all biased but I think our band/student section combo greatly surpasses any other school. Any history on the origins of the following are greatly appreciated as my knowledge is lacking: First down song/chant (seems like this one has been around forever). 2nd down song (used to think the hand gyrations in student section evolved while I was there in late 90s?) Neck (sometime within last 10 yrs but don't know much else) 4th down "defensive stop" (think the song has been around awhile but not sure if the fans "We are not worthy" was done when I started going to games in the mid-80s. Playing "Hey Baby" at the end of games. Playing "Hold That Tiger" at the end of the 3rd quarter.
hey Eq4bits where did you find your avatar? Would love to make that into a tshirt...or something similar
I suppose you could say Tiger Band songs have evolved since your time in the student section, if by "evolve" you mean the Tiger Band director continues to ban more songs every year since they think it will shut up the potty mouths. Tiger Rag? Gone. Oh-ee-oh? Gone. Maybe this year they'll wash our mouths out with soap and send us to bed without dinner. I understand why they're doing it, but it's only going to get worse with that kind of ham-handed approach.
The students can act up to their hearts content, but doing it to ruin Tiger Band routines is unacceptable. Time to grow up, kiddies.
I can't answer everything but will give you what I know A version of "Hold that Tiger" and has been around as long I can remember created during the early 90's, not sure about student movements Introduced in 2006, partially to update the stands tunes, but also (but will never be admitted by administration) put in to appease students when they took away the full version of Tiger Rag that year. Originally titled Chinese Bandits for obvious reasons, the name changed just to Bandits in 2003 when someone up in the administration of the school decided it wasn't PC to call it by traditional name. Not always played at the end. It was traditionally played after the band got into the stadium. It has become a fan favorite so the directors have started playing it more often and at the end of games more. Actually known as Pre-game (not the fight song btw) it has been played there at least since the mid 90's if I remember correctly. One extra for you. The third down cheer (eye of the tiger short) was created at the request of Terri Saban in 2000.
