It is no secret that Petrino is getting hammered by just about everyone associated with the Louisville program. Hell, it even made ESPN front page on how angry people are. To me, Skip knows if he wants Petrino or not by now. If Skip did not want to sign this guy, I would think Skip would have let Petrino know so that on national TV, Petrino could 'withdraw' his name from consideration and save some face. I think the furor would calm down with a flat denial on TV before the game, and hopefully Petrino could go on. I may be naive, but I would like to think this scenario would have happened if he is indeed not our coach. Thoughts?
I think Skip is looking at other candidates higher on his wish list, but that Petrino is #1 on his '2nd' list. Petrino may think he's #1 guy (and he may be), and LSU is just doing due dilligence.
I don't think Skip is sure yet, my thinking is that Skip likes Petrino and would be happy with him as our Head Coach but still has some people to interview (perhaps people we don't know about) and wants to take all options into consideration. I don't think Petrino is necessarily not our number one candidate or on the 2nd list or whatever - just that Skip doesn't want to jump into anything. he wants to feel out each and every coaching possibility out there. Despite some rumors, I don't think our head coaching position has already been filled.
He could be plan B, plan C, or who knows what? Why tell him no just yet if he is near the top? Example: Del Rio is the top choice. Skip keeps Petrino hanging based on the Del Rio outcome. See how that works? If Petrino were really concerned about the situation in Louisville, he'd pull his name from the LSU gig. OTOH, it is now sounding like Louisville might cut him loose anyway just because the fans are angry about this. I can't imagine this happening in BR; otherwise, Saban could have been tossed anytime over the last three years or so.
I think that the Nutts and the Petrinos and the Tubervilles and the Miles may all very well be a big smokescreen that Skip is putting up. He's playing this thing very close to the vest and he's got to leak some random names for public consumption to divert attention away from the people he really wants to talk to. I don't think any of us have any real clue as to who Skip is actually talking to, but I can't shake the feeling that we're all going to be pleasantly surprised. Call it my unwavering faith in a guy who found a way to win 5 NCs in baseball.
I guess I am just starting to feel bad for the guy. Yes he is guilty of trying to advance himself at the expense of loyalty (sounds familiar?) but Louisville should be thankful he put them on the map (sound familiar?). I went through my angry phase with Saban as well (primarily that it dragged on) but I hold no ill will towards Saban for moving on.
I tell you one thing I did not like is that player getting in Petrino's face. I would like to see Petrino sit his ass out the rest of the game.
