I hope tOSU and Michigan do not play each other in the BCS Championship. It's not good for the game. 1) Having thought about it, if the shoe was on the other foot and there were, say, two undefeated SEC teams, or two undefeated Big 12 team, who played their conference championship (producing a loser) and then clamored that both teams should still play for the BCS title... I'd think they were freakin' nuts. 2) Only conference champions should be eligible in the BCS format... that should be law, going all the way back to Oklahoma losing to K-State, then still playing LSU in the big game. 3) Although in-conference rivalries are great for the game, the Bowl season is best when geared to intersectional play. I don't like watching OSU play ND in a bowl anymore than I would get excited to watch Georgia Tech play, say, Auburn in a bowl. The best bowls are north/south, east/west, etc. If, in fact, Michigan and Ohio State just happen to be the two best teams this year... then their case can best be made by beating other teams in the bowl games... and finishing the year #1 and #2. Playing each other, regardless of who wins, would prove little. As a side note, Florida didn't help their cause with their less than perfect play against the Hogs. They could have sealed the deal if they didn't look and play like some WAC team last night. It's too bad McFadden wasn't at full strength... and that misplayed punt return... that was awful!! Anyway, there's Hawker's best imitation of Deep Thoughts from Jack Handey.
I agree with your points.(I can't beleive I just agreed with a Big Ten fan...what's next, me agreeing with an Aubie? ) Anyway, you could actually go back 2 years before that when Nebraska didn't even participate in the Big XII title game, yet still got to play against Miami in the MNCG.
I didn't think it was possible a few weeks back that a 1 loss SEC Champ would lose out to the OSU/Michigan loser for 2nd place in the BCS. What's sad is the game wasn't nearly as close as they make it out to be. The turnovers by OSU were quite critical and kept Michigan in the game. But you never felt Michigan really had a chance to win. And then they come down and get a cheapo TD to make the score seem a lot closer than it really was. This just in, Ohio State just scored again. One broadcaster yesterday made the following remark: "Michigan was just an onside kick away from beating Ohio State". Need I say more?
A lot of people feel that way and, on the surface it seems very logical....... then you look at our situation this year: Florida beat us in a game where we played horrible (I know "Champiopnship teams have to be consistent) and we beat Arkansas. Then Florida beats Ark. Most would agree that the "Best" team didn't play in the SECCG; even Ark. and Fla. fans would at least have to admit that LSU is as good as either. Conclusion, despite not getting to the SECCG, LSU is still very deserving of a BCS bowl.
Nah, you said enough already... :hihi: But seriously, you know what? They're the two best teams in the country. It's the system man, it's the system. It just goes to prove that a playoff system is needed ASAP!!!!!!
I probably did a poor job with my clarity. I have no problem with two teams from the same conference being in BCS bowls. My intent was to say only teams who win their conference should be eligible to play in the BCS title game.
To add to that, I kind of feel the same (however I really want LSU in the Rose to get a piece of USC)... but yeah, I don't think someone should be allowed to play for a NC if they're not at least the conference champ... That said, I also think that if they were to make this a stipulation, they should also make all conferences play title games. I just don't think it helps to have a conference champ rule if everyone doesn't have to play a game for their championship..
Conference champ or not the right decision would be who are the two best teams in the country...doesn't matter if they come from the same conference. You have to take each team on their accomplishments and look at it like that. My pick is Florida in spite of what it does to LSU's chances to make it to the Rose. But my heart wants Michigan to play Ohio State so we can play USC.
Actually, it shouldn't make any difference how a conference determines its champion. I use to want the Big Ten to add a team and have a championship game... but since I've been visiting this board all I hear is how the SEC screws themselves with the polls, etc., by having a championship game, where some deserving team has to suffer a loss in their final game.... and their resolution is to have all conferences do it... so everyone can be just as miserable. Now I say, if it causes all those problems, why would the Big Ten or Pac10 even think about it? It's like the Randy Newman song, "I just want you to hurt like I do".
