I was just reading Ivan Maisel's chat wrap that he did. It seems a few of our LSU faithful asked him about CLayton getting some Heisman notice.

    http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=3959

    Toward the end:

"Ryan (Brewster, NY): Why the cheap shots at LSU and Michael Clayton? Last I checked, quite a few people outside of Jefferson Parish HAVE heard of him.

Ivan Maisel: Not intended as a cheap shot. I just don't think Clayton has a big-enough national profile at this point. He needs to separate himself from the masses. Big numbers against a good team will help. Big numbers against Arizona, not a good team, in the middle of the night didn't help him enough.
    In my opinion. "

I read this and i see the hypocracy in some of these statements. I read about some of the other WR that are getting some attention like Fitzgerald out of Pittsburg or Williams from USC or Gamble from Michigan and it really bothers me the lack of respect for the talents of Clayton. These guys have also played a few bush league teams, and one or more have gotten less yards then Clayton. However, they are on the lips of ESPN and the like when talking about the best college players. I think that the only reason that these receivers have a "big enough profile" is because Maisel and Alberts and other commentators gush about these guys and leave out true prospects like Michael.

Clayton will get his respect when he is a Superstar in the NFL and some of those other guys are selling insurance or flipping burgers.

as far as not having a big enough National profile, things like this will definitly help.... 3 out of 26 questions Maisel answered were about Clayton alone...if he keeps showing up in things like this, and keeps putting up good numbers, everyone will know who Clayton is by mid-season. In a case like this, any publicity (whether, good or bad) is good publicity..Being a topic of chat on ESPN is nothing but a great step to getting Clayton's name out there...along with the numbers he will continue to put up..

Clayton has only played about half of each game this season and has 152yds and 108yds....just wait until he plays a full game.....Trust me, by mid-season......EVERYONE will know who Michael Clayton is!!!

Personally, I prefer Clayton just like he is: an unselfish receiver. Not some primadonna looking to put the spotlight on himself.

I generally don't like Maisel, but he's pretty much right on this one. Clayton's "national profile" is significantly lower than it deserves to be, based on his abilities, simply because we couldn't throw the ball very well last season. In his first year, Clayton put up very good numbers, especially for a true freshman, but these were rather obviously overshadowed by Josh Reed. Last year Clayton was dangerous enough to have put up the kind of stats that would have had him on everyone's "watch list," but Rohan was gone, and we all know about our struggles with the QB situation. So everyone around here has known that Clayton is as good as anyone in the country for a while now, but its not surprising that you don't always hear his name in the same sentence as the Williamses, Rashaun Woods, Fitzgerald, etc.

But obviously our QB situation looks good so far this season, so it looks like this is his year to show everyone else what we've known he can do all along.

I hope that he raises his profile by catching 12 passes for 174 yards and 3 td's in this year's Sugar Bowl!!!!
