I need to chime in on this point..... I think 400 Degreez is waaaay better... the intro song and the skits, along with the individual singles shine way over. Keisha is probably the best song to ever come out of the Cash Money camp.
Hahaha. NoLimit & 157, you two do really do not come across as the type to know that much about that genre. Like I said, not that there's anything at all wrong with that. Hell, I listen to a lot of hip-hop myself, I just prefer the deeper or more abstract types, such as The Roots, Atmosphere, or anything on Anticon.
My tastes in hip hop are extremely specific, and I hate a very large part of the genre. 157 doesn't seem to have very high standards, based on the earlier assessment of No Limit's "solid" records. Most people wouldn't think I'm a hip hop head, but it all started in '84 with Run DMC. Metal, rap, jazz...that's my preference, in no particular order.
You sound like you could appreciate Anticon. It's a conglomerate of artists and groups that are entirely too abstract for most hip-hop advocates. Bunch of educated white dudes, really. But, as someone who has been pretty involved with music and production, I can tell you that their originality and talent are literally second to none. Anyone who appreciates intelligent music should check 'em out. An example of some of the more accessible lyrics: descending on the center, from the outskirts of obscurity with a raised fist, symbolization of the urgency, strength blowing kisses and winks toward adversity, subtle yet as vital as the ink on your currency... Some of the more abstract: were you to pin open quotes to the top corners of the commonest phrases caught in the remote necks of familiar voices, and hold them to the light, the mid-air architecture of your lives together may show through the skeletal pauses, the tones stretched taut over the yawning cavities of fugitive phrases and their failing meanings, and the living microfossils of accent that it must be composed of Yep, I was down with DMC from day one. I even used to 'break to 'em (even in my 3rd grade talent show lol). I'm very picky about metal, though. I find that, aside from Tool, I don't really have much use for any of it made after '95 (when C.O.C.'s last great album came out). I stick to the old Metallica (pre self-titled album), Megadeth, and Maiden. Oh and I listen to west coast jazz all day at work. I usually prefer the more modern types, like Coltrain or some good hard-bop, but it's a little to chaotic for the work environment.
