Here is a team by team breakdown of Butch Davis' 6 year history in Miami (* denotes bowl game):

    Arizona State 0-1
    Arkansas State 1-0
    Baylor 2-0
    Boston College 6-0
    Cincinatti 1-0
    East Carolina 0-2
    East Tenn State 1-0
    Florida 1-0*
    Florida A&M 2-0
    Florida State 1-5
    Georgia Tech 1-0*
    Louisiana Tech 1-0
    McNeese 1-0
    Memphis 1-0
    North Carolina St 1-0*
    Ohio State 1-0
    Penn State 0-1
    Pitt 5-1
    Rutgers 6-0
    Syracuse 4-2
    Temple 6-0
    The Citadel 1-0
    UCLA 1-1
    Virginia 1-0*
    Virginia Tech 1-5
    Washington 0-1
    West Virginia 5-1

Butch Davis' combined record against Florida State and Virginia Tech was 2-10. That's not good, folks. Those are the 2 biggest games Miami plays each year. Do we want that at LSU? Do we want to be 2-10 against Auburn and Florida over the next 6 years. He lost to East Carolina not once, but twice.

Butch got the majority of his wins against the likes of Boston College, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and West Virginia, against whom he was a combined 32-4. Guys, we don't have any of these sorry teams in the SEC. Miami simply out-talented these teams year in and year out. But when faced with a big game, Butch Davis and Miami was on the short end more times than not.

Everyone talks about what a great recruiter Butch Davis was. That's true. Just look at the players in the NFL that he produced. But the fact is, he had trouble winning with that talent. He's the Dale Brown of college football. Recruiting is a big part of winning in college football. But it is not the only part of winning.

Butch Davis just isn't the answer for us right now.

And Saban has a losing record against Tubby. I guess that means that Tubby is a better coach. Or maybe we can't just look at records...I don't put much faith in records ESPECIALLY when the man recruited some kickass NFL talent.

All that shows to me is what we all know. And that is the fact that Miami never played a tough schedule. But that is just my opinion and yours may differ.

We need a big game coach.... I think Butch Davis needs a break from football... like Spurrier took... maybe then he would be a good coach, but right now... I think he bombs.

Where's the part where Davis did all of that after losing 32 scholarships? This may be the truth, but it's not the whole truth, is it?

Fair enough but that was an evasive answer. Also at the time, East Carolina had a pretty damn good run also.

Not bad for a school that damn near had the death warrant served.

My concern is his rep among potential recruits. A few years ago, he was a hot college coach that kids wanted to play for. Now he is an NFL burnout whose players couldn't wait to be rid of him. While a guy like Pete Carroll may not have won a lot in the NFL, he came to college football with a good reputation and a fire in his belly to succeed. Butch Davis was run out of the NFL on a rail and had a nervous breakdown. I have real concerns about whether Butch Davis is the right coach for LSU.

Here at TF you are expected to do well even with scholarship restrictions.

Exactly. Apparently, people here want a guy that couldn't win big games against top competition. It's all about who he recruits and who he sends to the NFL, right? Screw that. I want to win games, and I want to win championships. And to be the best, you have to beat the best. Butch Davis showed that he couldn't do that. Not at Miami, and certainly not at Cleveland.

Was Miami on probation in 1999 when they lost 4 games? No. Were they on probation in 1998 when Syracuse blasted them 66-13? No. He went 11-1 in 2000, but in each of his 5 other seasons, he had 3 or more losses. Outside of those crappy Big East teams, he rarely beat anybody.

The big name means nothing if he can't win.
