This past weekend I hads to drive through tuscolussa on my way to guntersville alabama, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Alabama is way to concerned with who is the coach at their school, and not so concerned about the school in general. Riding through bama, there were billboards everywhere that had images of bear bryant,or that plaid hat he wore. Now that saban is the coach for their school, they are absolutely infatuated with him. I don't know about you but I am not nor have ever been so much infatuated with any of our coaches as much as just LSU in general. Listen to the last verse of the LSU alma matter"forever L.S.U!", it doesn't say "forever LES MILES!". For some reason many bama fans seem to think we here at LSU could give a crap that their coach is nick saban. WHY?I'll tell you why, they live for their coach(alomst like a father figure)and not their school. There are some bama fans that somehow think that we are infatuated with their coach. Look at it like this, why before the bama-saban hire did bama fanswant nick so bad? Maybe for what he did at LSU? if that's the case then who is infatuated with who? To end this post I will say one last thing. LSU,the school, the university is what I love. There are people in place there that are paid to make decisions, so I go with whatever they think is best. If they make a hire for a coach that they want, that's fine with me. If a coach decides to leave and go to another team , well that is fine with me also, because you know what, when he's gone there's still a university here in baton rouge. There will always be a football team here, and I will always root for them no matter who is brought in to take the wheel. "FOREVER L.S.U!":helmet: :tigerhead :geauxtige
So, I cant entrench myself into a loving of lesticles? Good point. PS, dont look for that nasty search function.
I believe it is called houndstooth, not plaid. Little known piece of fiction that I just wrote, bear bryant was a closet ut fan. He so loved the checkerboard pattern in their endzone that he when he discovered (while taking a textile engineering course at Auburn under a pseudonym) a pattern that both closely matched the checkerboard and had the word hound in its name (Smokey, ut's mascot is a hound) he had a hat made from that material. Why a hat, because he thought anything about ut should rest above bama.
And our Student section does not paint "MilesNation" on their chest like the Bama student section had for the UGA game. I was trying to make out the letters on their chest and then I realized it said "SABANNATION" instead of "BAMANATION". I actually paused the game to make sure.
Not sure that Bama fans have been this infatuated with some of their former coaches even early in their careers. I think the current love affair with Saban is a bit unique. I believe it is an offshoot of their constantly overflowing optimism that they are finally back to being a national force. I hear it every year from my friends that are Bama fans. They win a few games early in the year and are telling me they will win the MNC. Then, later in the year, as we discuss another trip to Shreveport, they admit they are a mid tier SEC team that needs a lot to compete at the highest level. Next year it starts all over again. But I think a lot of them really, really believe that Saban is their 'answer'. Maybe he eventually will be.
Very good point Meaux. After reading your post here is what hit me like a ton of bricks. The subject of your post is EXACTLY why they had 92,000 at their spring game. Even during their glory days they never had even close to that many at their spring games. There were 92,000 at the spring game not because of Alabama football, but because of Nick Saban.
