http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2004-09-22-extending-schedules_x.htm The Good News: This will allow teams like LSU to schedule more home-n-home games with higher quality opponents whilst being able to play the needed seven home games to square the budget. I look forward to more matchups with teams like Virginia Tech and Arizona State in the future, but I would like it just as much if LSU went with my idea for an out-of-conference schedule plan that preserves our traditional rivalries. Either way, I knew the 12 game schedule every year was going to happen. The Bad News: From the article: "The conferences sponsoring the rules change, the Big 12 and Big East, acknowledge it "likely is contingent on postseason opportunities remaining at a maximum of two" — a conference championship game in applicable leagues and a bowl game, giving teams a maximum of 14 games in a season." In other words, "We're passing this in the hope that it will preclude any possibility of ever having a real playoff determine the national championship. We're going to force the colleges to choose between having the cash cow 12th game and the "financial uncertainty" of a postseason national championship tournament." And I know what college ADs and presidents are going to choose. It's always a double-edged sword with the NCAA.
I am not so sure this would encourage more home-n-home series. It may be more likely to encourage schools such as LSU to make 8 home games on each year's schedule instead of seven. It still all comes down to $$$ unfortunately.
Exactly....schools will just have 8 home games....since SoS is no longer a BCS factor, there is no reason to bring in another tough opponent, when we can just bring in another rent-a-win
I think if they do this they should pass a rule that you can have eight games every other year only, that way it would be a level playing field as far as homes revenue is concerned and make teams schedule home and home series. In turn the schools with the giant stadiums would tend to schedule each other since the payouts would be similar. They also should pass a rule that the 12 game cannot be a conference matchup.
That would be great to see 8 home games. The extra game would be a rent a win with SOS being out of the equation. Huge step backwards for the BCS.
