Nebraska just failed at the end of the UT game and it just gave me a thought. Why do you always see all 5 receivers (assuming that's how many are in on the play) go basically into 1 spot in the end zone?. You get nearly 13 players total all congested in the same area of the field. I would send 2 wideouts to 1 corner of the end zone and 3 to the other.....forcing the 8 defenders to split themselves up. I just think you would have a higher probability of a catch by your receiver without so many hands and arms and bodies intertwined for what is basically a jump ball.
I don't think they necessarily run routes to the same spot. The ball is just thrown up so high and long for grabs. By the time it gets there, everyone is at the spot trying to catch it.
Yeah I thought about that.....I guess looking at the Nebraska play, if you had a QB like Russell it's basically a missile into the endzone from 40 yards out and you could then split the receivers up as I stated above. But then who else has Russell's arm? Too bad they didn't have a really good kicker....a 58 yarder would not have been out of the question
In all of the years I've been watching college football, I think I've only seen it succeed a couple of times. It's basically a jump ball and you hope for a lucky tip.
I hope we're never in a situation to have to win it on the last play.....one miracle a lifetime (D. Henderson) is about all my heart could take- but Russell's arm is no theory. He can throw it through the uprights on one knee from the 50. Had that game had any more hail mary's and they could have finished the rosary. I had picked Nebraska, that fumble stung! but I'm glad because a Nebraska win against Texas would have helped USC's SOS a lot.
I meant your theory about splitting the receivers and throwing a bullet being a better option than creating a pile and just chunking it. Either way, I agree %1000 that Russell has a cannon for an arm, one of the strongest, if not the strongest in the ncaa.
It's called as hail mary for a reason and it's not based on sucess rates. A defensive penalty to get another play maybe a bit closer like what happened in the game ain't a bad deal either. One more and maybe you are kicking the ball to win the game.
