Read some more. There's a large discussion on this board somewhere about it. Hitler often publicly claimed to be a Christian & was never renounced by the religion. His devout atheism was private. Thus the basis of my argument.

There are tons of information on this subject on the web. This is a good, balanced starting point. Adolf Hitler - Christian, Atheist, or Neither?

The answer can be both yes and no and most likely neither. Hitler was baptised in the Catholic Church, participated as a youth, and was never excommunicated. He publicly described himself as a Catholic. Technically he was a Christian by the strict definition of the Church.

On the other hand he was certainly gulity of genocide and did not practice his religion at all later in life. He made statements both promoting and denying religion as it pleased him depending on his audience. In practical terms he was far from Christian in his actions.

The point Cparso and I are making is that there are several confusing definitions at play here among the arguments in this thread. I think these cloud the issue.

    1. Is one a Christian simply if one is baptised and a member of a church.

    2. Is one a Christian only if one truly practises Christian morality as well.

    3. Must one believe in biblical infallibility to be a Christian?

    4. Can one be both a devout Christian as a person and still be a devout secularist as a government figure?

    1. No. In Christ's words one must endure till then end. Baptism gains salvation, but that Salvation can be lost.

    2. No. Lots of practicing Christians have moral struggles. A Christian will no when they are wrong and seek to change their errors.

    3. That depends. If you mean that the Bible is the word of God and is 100% true, free of contridiction, and free from error, then yes. If you mean that the Bible has to be taken literally then, no.

    4. No. Being a Christian is requires that one beleive in absolutes. If something is true it is true in all cases. Jhhn Kerry is a good example. He said he privately does not agree with abortion, but it is not his choice to make for another. That is a position of a relativist. Relativists cannot be Christian.

As far Hitler, he viewed himself as a god. Just because he quoted the Bible in Mein Kampf, and hated Jews because they killed Jesus, does not make him Christian. He did not practice any religion. He used it to suit his means.

Wait, say that part again where Hitler used religion to suit his means. That is the whole point! The founding fathers could have done the same thing - there's just more uncertainty around it.

Why does being Christian require belief in absolutes in all cases?

i have told you people a million times that arguing over who is a real christian is like argiung over what color is puff the magic dragon. not only is the whole scene made up, it is self contradictory.

if hitler says he is christian, he is, according to him. if i he says he isnt, and i say he is, then he is, according to me. it makes no diffference.

you cant define fiction like it is is truth. anyone can say anything, justify anything. thats why it is so dangerous and terrible.

I do not understand this distinction. What do you make of the several such errors and contradictions pointed out earlier?

You'll have to explain that one, too. Chapter and verse, please.

There that is again. Do you have a source? I know of no instance where Hitler declared himself a God. Absolute leader and dictator, Yes.

i wasnt joking earlier when i said that god is so powerful that he is capable of impossible contradiction. he can maker a square circle. he can make a rock so heavy he cannot lift it, while at the same time easily being able to lift it.

the contradictions in the bible are not troublesome because god is so great that he can make anything true. that is how the bible is literally true even if it contradicts itself.

or at least that is the argument made by some christians, which i belive to be more sound than the arguments of the other christians who interpret whatever they want out of the bible, conceding that it is too nutty to be taken literally, as if the parts they beleive are not so nutty as to make them appear to be imbeciles for believing.

conclusion: i side with supafan and salty and the bible literalists over nolimitmd and the interpreters.

My Dad isn't very religious, but believes in God & all. I was talking with him over Christmas & the bible came up and he was mentioning how certain parts were probably just figurative. I couldn't help but laugh. To me, it seems people that think like this just lack the will to believe other than what they've been taught their whole lives - despite logic telling them otherwise.

Most alleged Biblical contridictions and errors come from people who take things in the wrong context or don't understand the simplistic nature of the Hebrew Languange. The latter is especially true of the OT.

What do I need a Bible verse for. Chritianity is based on absolutes. What is true for one is true for all.

Hitler was referred to by himself and others as the Fuhrer. While literally it translates to leader it carries much deeper meaning. It really means Lord. I would say that is source enough. If you read Mein Kampf he refers to himself as a supreme being more than once.
