The days of "commitment" from a TOP coach is over...

I keep hearing people looking for commitment from a coach. Believe me, I am probably the saddest person in town that we lost Nick, but I knew it would happen and it had to happen when WH offered him the ranch--unless he took it no NFL team would ever bother to offer again. But I wouldn't trade the last five years for all the commitment in the world. I think that the new bidding wars over head coaches (which is only getting worse, not better, thanks to people like Jimmy Sexton) will keep everyone hopscotching each other. No longer will there be Bobby Bowdens or Joe Paternos (or even Steve Spurriers) in their jobs for long periods unless just coincidentally they're pretty near retirement. And if a guy is that old we might get stuck with what Penn State now deals with--past him prime but can't fire the guy.

Yes, I miss Saban. And I do NOT think from the public side of this search that anyone at LSU is approaching this the way Mark Emmert did. I think Sean O'Keefe should be looking into this--it's one of the most important things a flagship university is known for--but he is obviously not sharp enough to realize that he should make them let him help even though he isn't officially on board. This reminds me of the old Joe Dean type lists of candidates, people who are cheaper who want it really badly. We don't want anyone who's dying to be here. We want someone who is so hot that they don't need us. Miles and Petrino are second-class, and it won't take more than one season for everyone to find out.

I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Petrino is known for buddying up to board members and letting them tell him what to do. Miles is hungry for the chance we offer. Neither one of them know defense. Shouldn't this be ringing some bells in people's minds????

Anyway, forget looking for long commitments or big buyouts. We want a coach who is so hot that he has the bargaining power not to have a buyout in his contract. After all, we have to remember WE ARE LSU.

At this point who cares? Just get me a quality coach that can continue what Nick started and when he leaves we will get another. It is more important that Skip find a quality coach than it is for him to find a loyal coach IMO.

Jeff Fisher, Jimmy Johnson, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, etc.

Mike Shanahan, Dave Wannstedt. People who are at the NFL level now...or people who are winning big in college now like Tedford, Richt, Alvarez.

cant interview any of those guys in the pros right now.

richt no shot. jimmy johnson? wake up. pete carroll, wake up even more.

so you'd waste your time interviewing guys you likely have zero shot at?

I understand wanting names but there are also those who admins are aware won't leave regardless. stoops is one of those. jimmy johnson is so far removed fishing in the miami keys he couldnt care less about college.

id agree with tedford and even he is a long, long shot at best. you cant interview til next christmas either.

Other NFL teams can't talk to NFL head coaches or assistants(see Miami), but a college team can hire them right now just ask Notre Dame.

I tend to agree, but there are a couple of exceptions, namely Pete Carroll and Bob Stoopes. I think Stoopes will be at OU for a long time. I don't see him pulling a Switzer anytime soon. And Carroll already had his run in the NFL, failed, and got shoved out of NYC with a kick up his ass. He's cozy here in So. Cal. now. He's got a great gig. And in a town with no NFL, he is the main game when it comes to football. So, there's hope that someone out there wants to be the next Bear Bryant of the SEC, or even a Charlie Mac. I can only hope, but I realize it is unlikely. I miss those days.
