You've got to be kidding me! USC is being voted by SI as having the 2nd "gutsiest" schedule in the country this yearo: . How can you call that freaking cake walk gutsy? I realize that they are playing a few decent out of conference teams, but come on! Notre Dame does earn the #1 spot. I'm not one of those people that subscribe to the theory that the national media is out to get LSU or anything, but the sucking up to USC could stand to be toned down a few thousand notches. At some point money has to take a back seat to journalistic credibility. http://premium.si.cnn.com/pr/subs2/siexclusive/2005/pr/subs/siexclusive/08/24/cf.success0829/index.html
ok so its based on OOC schedule.... thats the only part of ur schedule u can control. @Hawaii Arkansas @ Notre Dame Fresno State only one ranked is fresno @ #24. hawaii? this is the worst hawaii team in over a decade. 30+ point underdogs in hawaii. Arkansas minus matt jones and everyone else. USC will be 17+ point favorites. Notre Dame? they'll be 20+ point favorites. Fresno? about the same. SI should be ashamed of themselves. they're more irrelevant than SportsCenter. then again they have been for a long time.
The simple fact of the matter is USC almost always has a good OOC schedule, they tend not to play many cupcakes and their AD did a much better job of getting a late replacement in Fresno than Dan R did in getting APSU. We can knock USC's overall schedule but not their OOC schedule. The home and home with Notre Dame is one of the best series in history and will get good again most likely under Weis. The home and home with Arkansas follows up ones with Auburn, Colorado, FSU, Illinois, etc.
The bottom line is what the bottom line has always been...just win out and it will take care of itself. Frustrating? yes but it will be that much sweeter when we see ESPN, ABC, the History Channel, and Discovery all try to make explanation of how the greatest team ever assembled, with the greatest quarterback to pull up a jock strap (albiet a small one), and the finest college coach in the history of organized football was humbled in the 2006 Rose Bowl by the FIGHTING TIGERS OF LSU!!!!!!:geauxtige
In this morning's USA Today, there is a promo on page 1 of the sports section that states: "Examining race to be college football's No. 2 in Friday's Bonus Section". That is a little over the top. If the condoms lose one game they are going to be the laughing stock of college football.
although fresno state is the only one ranked right now, it could very well be the fact that when these games were scheduled each of these four teams were much better football teams than they are this year. therefore, the scheduling was gutsy. It isn't USC's fault that each program has dropped in quality. so, as far as "gutsy"...maybe so. but if it is a measure of difficulty in OOC scheduling, then no matter how gutsy the original scheduling may have been, USC's schedule is laughable.
SabanFan, I'm slightly editing your post. Hope you don't mind. How about: When the condoms lose one game they, and all the obnoxious people in the media already trying to declare them the 2006 national champions are going to be the laughing stock of college football.
Personaly, I beleive that USC can lose a game and still go to the Rose bowl. I think that for the Media to wake up and put them low enough to put them out of reach of the title game they will have to lose 2.
How would you complare some of these other OOC schedules: Washington: Air Force, Idaho, Notre Dame Texas: ULL, Ohio St., Rice USM: Bama, NC State, McNeese Ohio St.: Miami of Ohio, Texas, San Diego St. Oklahoma: TCU, Tulsa, UCLA Rice: UCLA, Texas, Navy Hawaii: UCS, Mich St., Wisconsin Florida: Wyoming, La Tech, FSU Auburn: Ga Tech, Ball St., W.
