Not being able to sleep proved beneficial in one respect tonight. ESPN Classic is showing the 1983 Orange Bowl against Nebraska. The 1982 team had to be the biggest group of overachievers. I was only 6 at the time, but I remember the 1981 team having a losing season, and the 1982 team was supposed to be the same way. The announcers said they were picked to finished last in the conference. However, that team went 8-2-1, and earned a birth to the Orange Bowl. They were 14 point underdogs to Nebraska, but played them tough and should have won. How do you lose a game when you cause 6 turnovers? Oh well, it was neat to see Dalton Hilliard as a freshman, Eric Martin, Ramsay Dar Dar, and a few others. To be honest, it was kind of neat to see some of the Nebraska players in that game, i.e. Roger Craig, Mike Rozier, and Dean Steinkuler. Anyone else have cool memories like that?
I saw it also. Didn't wnat to watch it, because I knew the outcome. But did to see the old players. Yes the igers should have won.
An incredible number of future NFL players were in that game, in cluding all of LSUs defensive linemen and all of Nebraska's Offensive linemen. Nebraska All-American, jersy-retired, first-round draft pick center Dave Rimington got his ass handed to him by LSU Nose Guard Ramsey Dardar. Nebraska double- and triple-teamed Dardar the whole second half which just allowed Bill Elko and Leonard Marshall to run wild.
I watched most of the game last night too. That was the last game that I don't remember anything about (born in 1977). I do, however, remember having a conversation about Hilliard one night when he was tucking me in to bed. My dad was telling me how Hilliard had three years left to play at LSU and it seemed like an eternity back then. I saw a graphic last night that Hilliard had broken the NCAA freshman record for TD's. He had two in that game also which would've given him 18 for the year (including the bowl game). He was so much fun to watch.
They also said that the delay of game call in the 4th quarter was the first one the Tigers had all season. That is amazing. I was born in 1976, and remember watching the team that, but didn't remember any of the details. I was also not allowed to watch that game when it happened because it was passed my bedtime. I don't even think kids have bedtimes anymore. It was still fun to see even though I knew they lost.
