If Major Applewhite was such a bust(i assume he was a bust because he wasnt THE MAN during his SENIOR year)

Why did Texas go after another Louisiana Quarterback?

I wouldn't even assume he was a bust. My taking on the situation is that Mack promised Chris simms the starting spot as soon as he was ready. He made the mistake of thinking Chris simms was ready before he was and that affected Major Applewhite...

So I wouldn't say Major was a bust...Especially considering he ended up coaching there after he graduated. Also, you can't base recruiting on a state as a hole like that...RP and Major are two different players and require different considerations...

Major was definitely the better of the 2 QBs at Texas...just Mack's ego got in the way.

Applewhite will always be remembered for his last game played...in relief of Simms in the Holiday Bowl against Washington. I believe Applewhite lead the Horns to a come from behind victory in that game...........

Major Applewhite owns every single passing record at texas and was big12 offensive player of the year his sophomore year. He is the furthest thing from a bust. He was smart, clutch and a great leader. Everything you need to win national championships in college football. And he beat Oklahoma.

Mack Brown cost himself a chance at titles by pulling him in favor of Simms. Simms is the measurables and nothing else. Seems everyone knew that in Austin except Brown.

Appleweight was a great QB.....Brown was kissing Sims ass so much that he never got a chance to take that next step to stardom, imo

okay the point of this post is....

    1. If EVERY top louisiana recruit went to LSU, then they would all at least one national championship because LSU would FOR SURE win 1 out of every 5 national championships.

    2. At least when LSU had a quarterback disaster we had THREE going for one spot. Texas messed up even more because they only had TWO going for one spot.

I'm not sure how this relates to your original post, but...

    1) It's possible. But it would take some great out-of-state recruiting too. As great as LA is for recruits, depending solely on the state would be a disaster and would keep us from getting Mauck, Davey, Wilkerson, etc...I know you aren't saying that we should ignore the out of state guys, but they are just as important, IMO, as the in state recruiting these days...

    2) Texas messed up because Mack Brown completely ****ed up the QB rotation. Where as he should have left Major in there as long as Major was there, he decided to take him out and put an unproven and raw QB in there. When he actually did wise up to his mistake, it was too late for the NC, but did save the bowl game...

On this one, Mack screwed the pooch. Major was a winner and everybody knew it.....even Mack. Consensus among Texas fans seemed to be the problem was the promises Mack had to make to Phil Simms to get the kid to drop Tennessee and come to Austin.

To Major's credit, he handled it all with a great deal of class. I'm bettin' he's gonna be one hell of a good coach someday soon.
