Texas sweeps by Florida..... :dis: ...I think I'm going to puke....

With the win, the Longhorns pass us up for most CWS titles (6) for 2nd on the all-time list (USC is 1st with 12 titles) followed by us (5) and Arizona State (5).

USC set the standard  (can't believe I said that s***) with their 12 titles...

Skip revolutionized the sport, and changed the concept of not only our university, but also across the country, in showing that athletic departments CAN make money on baseball...

But it's painfully evident that Texas (with it's 4th-straight CWS appearance), is perfecting the art of being able to actually keep going back to Ohmaha.

Texas stock-piles studs on the mound. They play in a spacious ballpark, and they recruit pitchers and outfielders with speed. All of their players are tall, lanky kids. They won't pile up a lot of HR's (given their home field demisions) but it's clear that they can knock a few out, but they focus on defense. Their CF was really awesome to watch. He made diving catch, after diving catch. They have a solid starting rotation and really develop a closer (Houston Steet and this year J. Brent Cox) and had a SOLID defensive infield.

Great pitching will beat great hitting 9-out-of-10 times.

I hate talking up Texas like that (BELIEVE ME! I would rather have my eyes poked out), but they actually have the ingredients to continue to keep going back to Ohmaha--which is what I want in our program. Texas is always a consideration for the CWS--just like we were in the '90's. But since the 2000 season, when we made it back in 2003, we were young and we're expected to make it--but we did. Our youth showed, and we went home early. 2004 was a year that people said, "Well, they can make it. --They weren't supposed to make it last year, but did, so we'll see". Well, we saw another 0-2 showing. This past year, we fizzled and fell flat on our faces and with a lot of talent responsible for getting us as far as we did this season either graduating, or leaving early for the pros, we have even more question marks needing to be answered before next season starts back up again.

A few random thoughts on Texas.......

Augie recruits defense. Doesn't much matter to him if a kid can hit like johnnybgoode, if he can't play excellent defense, he won't play much for Augie.

This year's champs were one of the best defensive clubs I've seen in Omaha. He's got some big holes to fill next year - C, 2B, SS, 3B, and closer.

    Bunts can win.

Speed. Texas had a lot of it on the field.

They lost their best starting pitcher (LeCure) to academics before the start of the season.

    J. Brent Cox was just damned impressive.

I have a whole year to listen to how great the Longhorns were/are. :cuss:

Nothing to be ashamed of. UT is the pre-eminent program in College Baseball
right now...primarily because they were able to replace one coaching legend (Cliff Gustafson) with another...something we weren't able to do.

For all of the Smoke apologists that use the excuse that College Baseball has reached parity and that the days of the dynasties are over, I submit Texas to you as proof that you're wrong. "Parity" should never be an excuse for allowing your program to slide.

That's a great name. Sounds more like a Wall Street investment banker or
plaintiff's attorney than a relief pitcher.
