Terry Martin Jr. Question

In the paper today, it says that he will sit out his year and be eligible for the Spring 2007 semester. It then says he will have 2 full years of eligibility left. My question is this:

If he plays next spring semester (2006-2007), will he only have 1.5 years left after the season? If so, that would mean in the 2008-2009 season he would only be able to play the first half of the year and would miss all of SEC and NCAA tournament play. Or does it mean that he'll be able to play next spring and then have 2 full more years after that?

If it is only 2 full years, Brady has a dilemma on whether to play him next spring with what could be a dynamite team or to hold him out until the start of the 2007-2008 year to allow 2 complete seasons.

The day you step into a college classroom you have 5 years to play 4 seasons of your sport........(unless you're a QB for Oklahoma, you get 6 years)

If you only play fall or only play spring it still counts as a whole season in the eyes of the NCAA....... So if he has to sit out until fall semester is over and he misses 10 games, it still counts as one of his years of eligibility.....

I'm pretty sure he can play next semester of next year, plus 2 more full seasons after that. I really hope Terry Martin is as good as people are saying because we could be losing some players after this season.

i would assume they mean he gets half of next year, then 2 more years. because he left texas tech early in his sophomore year right?

so he sorta finishes his soph season at lsu next spring, then plays on his junior and senior years. that makes sense right? he already used up his freshman year and a little of his sophomore.

    05-06, freshman
    06-07, soph
    07-08, junior
    08-09, senior

He'll join the team during the 06-07 season (Jan, 07) as a soph and will have 2 full years after that.

i think crawfish answered it. you dont get half years. he played some this year so it counts as a year. there's no minimum redshirt type deal in hoops like there is in football as far as i know.

but if the paper had it worded like miked said and is correct then that's news to me and half years are granted. sounds odd.

I think the bottomline is that he can play spring semester of next year PLUS he has 2 more years after that.

Don't know the rules all that well, but from following this recruitment and watching other transfers, you technically have to sit out a full year before you can play again. You also lose a year (or have limited time in which to play college ball, whichever way you look at it) within your overall 4 years of eligbility (unless extended for redshirt reasons), and the time you sit counts against those four years (the positive is you can still practice and travel with the team during this time). So, in this case, Terry Martin Jr. is a FRESHMAN (not a sophomore), but he played 1 semester at Texas Tech. He sits this semester for LSU and next fall semester (full year for transfer), and has up to 2.5 years of eligibility left, which means he can play spring semester in 2007, and then play two more full years after that...

Again, don't quote me on that, but I think that's how it works. Brady doesn't have any "war gaming" tactics about when to play Martin. He'll play Martin in all the games he can, b/c Terry wants to play probably as soon as he can, and as of spring of next year, we don't know the status of Tack, and D.Mason will have been unproven as well. I'll take this a welcome problem, which is we seemingly have depth (and good depth) at the guard spot, although now we may be stacked at SG (since Garrett Temple is improving with each game, and thus there will be a three way competition between Temple, Mason and Martin). Depending on how Tack comes back and whether Voogd improves, Brady may be confronted with whether he tries Temple or Martin at point, which are spots that they played in high school. We could conceivably go with a "big" line up--2 6'5" guards, Tasmin at 6'7" SF, Tyrus, Darnell and Magnum at PF (6'8-6'10") and big baby in the middle, assuming everyone stays. Lots of possibilities...:geauxtige

It seems like nobody knows for sure, so I decided to email the Sports Information Dep and ask them. I'll post the answer when/if I hear back from them.

found this in the 2004-2005 ncaa transfer guide:

How do I know if I have used a season of competition?
Generally, NCAA rules indicate that any competition in a season, regardless of
the amount of time, counts as season in that sport. One second spent in competition
on the field, court, gym or track counts as a season of competition.

Under the transfer regulations, I have to spend a year of residence at the school
to which I am transferring. What is a year of residence? Does summer school
    count? Can I go part-time?
To satisfy a year of residence, you must be enrolled in and pass a minimum fulltime
program of studies for two full semesters or three full quarters. (See definition
in Section IV.) Summer school terms do not count toward a year of residence,
and part-time enrollment does not count toward a year of residence.

ok, so now we know why he cant play til Spring 07, but does he have one or two full years after spr 07? he has to be a LSU student for one year before he can play for LSU, but does that year take away from his 4 eligible years?
