Before the glamour kicks in, though, stepping on the playing field is a major prerequisite. For some freshmen, the adjustment from big fish in a small pond to small fish in a much bigger pond isn't a big challenge. For most, though, the jolt of going from high school superstar to starting from scratch is a major hurdle. A few months removed from being the best of the best at the prep level, the fragile psyche of a 17-19 year old freshman is forced to endure the hard-to-stomach thought of sitting on the bench instead of basking in the glow of the spotlight. Imagine then, the range of emotions a freshman navigates when he or she arrives at the college level and hears the word "redshirt." When Garrett Temple and Tyrus Thomas took their places in the LSU men's basketball program a little more than a year ago, they were ready to play. But a series of circumstances, and the realization that the two less heralded members of the Tigers' freshman class were less polished then Glen Davis, led to both players redshirting in 2004-05. "When I got here, I thought I could play right away, so it was hard to accept the idea of redshirting," said Thomas, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward. "I struggled with it for a long time."
