I have a question for anyone out there who has successfully set up a satellite while tailgating to watch ESPN... how do you do it? Is it enough to have a directv reciever and dish (and electricity of course), or do you actually have to subscribe and have an active card in the reciever? I've never been able to get it to actually work right, and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could give me advice or even know how to reprogram an inactive card.

You definitely have to be subscribed and have an active card in there. If you are not subscribed it will not work.

You can use a receiver from your house as long as you have a paid subscription. You do not have to buy an additional receiver or anything. As long as you have that, a dish, some power, and maybe a compass to help you get the signal it should be very simple.

That and you have to change the zip code that you type in when you first get it to reflect the BR zip code. If I remember correctly.

The zip code you type in is just to help you align it, if you live in Baton Rouge then the coordinates to align the dish will be the same at the tailgate. You need:

    1. Antenna assembly (plus compass and level to align...and some mechanism to stabilize it)
    2. Receiver + valid card, subscribed with basic subscription package (at least)
    3. Power

You'll need the cables and other basic components as well of course...call DTV or DISH and tell them you've got a system but the sub has lapsed, and you'd like to re-subscribe. Depending on how old it is, they may send you a newer card, so you better call them and subscribe soon in case they have to ship you a new one.

If you've never aligned a dish before, I suggest you practice in the yard - you don't want to be fiddling around with the signal while the game is on heh. You can use any receiver to align it, whether it's with dish or dtv even if the card is not subscribed -- but to watch, it'll have to be subbed.

Excellent advice. I wish someone would have told me in advance. We had a guy with us that could do it in about 2 minutes. Last season he didn't tailgate with us. So i said "we'll figure it out"............still haven't figured it out.

I sure there's a rea$on the LSU PD Officer's ignore a few generators and harass other people. I understand that some residents of the Pentagon dorms can be bribed for electrical connections. Good luck.

No need for a generator. A good deep cycle marine battery will last 4-5 hours on a 23" TV with a sat receiver. I used to do it every game.
