White kids can no longer be told they can't attend a school because "There are too many whites".

So Seattle schools were using race as the tiebreaker when too many kids sought admission to a certain school ?

Damn, the basketball team just went in the dumper.

The fact that Hillary denounced the decision is a good indicator that it may be right.:hihi:

It was interesting to watch the dem debate last night. Of course, they all went nuts over this ruling as if the court somehow said blacks are no longer allowed to go to school with whites. The spin was amazing.

Can anyone say that our public education is any better as a result of desegregation and forced busing? It's not in EBR parish.

I have never understood why people didn't just have freedom of choice on this. Send your kids to any public school you want to. If you want them in the neighborhood school, fine. If you want them to attend a school across town that has a better music program, fine. If you want them to go to a school with a better college prep curriculum, fine. Maybe you need them to go to a school near work for convenience.

It would allow ambitious students to escape schools where apathy rules. It would allow students to escape schools where poor security exists. It would even allow for people wanting to go where the racial makeup was more to their liking.

Let the funding follow the students. Excellent schools would thrive and grow, perhaps even multiply. Poor schools would wither and eventually be closed. In such fashion the quality of all remaining schools would improve.

Let each principal design his school and hire/fire his teachers to attract students and succeed as best he sees it. Neighborhood elementary schools could flourish. Some high schools might focus on science or the arts. Other might focus on academics or or a fine swimming program. A few could focus on students with special learning needs while others might just attempt to be a good all-around environment to learn in. Something for everybody.

And race plays no role. Anyone can go where they want to and stay as long as they make the grade and behave. Which probably means there will have to be a few schools specializing in troubled and trouble-making students.

And, that's the key. I was Junior in high school in 1966 when integration was mandated. It was polarizing, to be sure, but IMO necessary to "get the ball rolling" so to speak. Now, 40 years later, there is no need to force diversity. Americans of all stripes are free to go wherever they want to. Counting heads (and colors) is an antiquated notion that serves no purpose. We are now where they wanted to go in 1966 but no one wants to admit it. Minorities need to quit bitching and just live their lives as Americans. The problem, of course, is that so many people are dependent upon the government for every basic need that the paranoia over losing something supercedes any rational thought.

In large part, deseg didn't bring minorities up; rather, it brought others down.

Sadly, that is perfectly fine for all too many people in this country. We lower standards so we can proclaim we are all equal. Everyone should have equal access and the same resources to succeed in this country. But that's where government intervention should end.

After that, it's up to individuals to make something out of their lives.

I agree and have always found it funny how parents will load up and travel 3 hours to see a playoff game but not 10 minutes to attend an academic ceremony.
