all puerto ricans in the bronx are yankee fans. that is just one of the many terrible things about the bronx.

i dunno much about this lady, she seems decent i guess, although i am sure she was chosen partially because she is a neoyorquino woman

I think she is a hack and from what I understand a good bit of her opinions support that assumption. Had to know something like this was coming. I'd hope that the appointment could be stopped but I know it won't be. Even if it were, the next in line would probably be even worse. Hope Scalia and CT are eating their vitamins and metamucil (sic) so they can hang on till we oust this clown from office.

She's a center-left moderate with no apparent skeletons in her closet. The best academic credentials available, more time as a federal judge than any current member had when nominated, and young enough to stick for a while. Appointed to the circuit court by a republican, George Bush I ,and to the Appeals court by a democrat, Clinton. She seems pretty good to me.

I don't really understand the objections from the right and left wing extremists. The court is too polarized right now and needs more moderates. The extreme liberals would be happy with nobody likely to be qualified or appointable.

The extreme conservatives are just not likely to get anyone further to the right appointed by this administration. It's no surprise seeing that republicans appointed staunch conservatives the last few times around. Elections have consequences and there simply aren't going to be any more ultra-conservatives appointed any time soon.

But Obama is apparently trying to break the cycle of appointing political ideologues and trying to find more pragmatic and moderate voices. Sounds good to me.

She's replacing another center-left justice so the political leaning of the court will not change this time. But when a republican judge dies or retires, we may start to see a shift. Hopefully back to the center and not another wild pendulum swing to the left.

Obama seems to realize that there are fewer and fewer people on the political extremes and more and more in the middle and he's playing for that demographic. Which is smart.

She does have a few judicial skeletons in her closet and if we lived in a democracy, she'd have a tough time being seated. But for now, we are living in the Liberal States of America.

Was it a democracy when the republicans had the White House, both side of Congress and the Supreme Court?

I dont know much about this lady so will have to reserve judgment until her confirmation hearings. I seriously doubt she will have any issues getting confirmed. On the surface it looks like a reasonable appointment.

She'll have to explain her flip "policy is set at the appelate court level" remark and her ruling against reverse discrimination in the Firefighter case won't sit well with moderates and conservatives.

As long as she rules in accordance with the law and not with her "empathy", I'll have little problem with her. At least she's a judge.

I heard some dude on Morning Addition on NPR say something about her stating that her rulings are biased by her heritage and this makes her incompatible with the oath of office. Here is the quote he referenced and the oath. I think he has a point.

She just seems to be stating the obvious to me.

Recognizing that differences exist in different judges from different backgrounds does not prevent a judge from "impartially discharging and performing all the duties incumbent upon" her.

Amazingly enough the Supreme Court will have only ONE white Anglo Saxon Protestant male among six Catholics and two Jews. I suppose Protestant outrage will be next . . .
