I know there is some bitterness about the BCS. So before we blow a gasket over a bunch of crap I give you what the BCS has done. Just one example sums it up. Nebraksa plays for a National Title, and does not even win their own conference.... That pretty much sums it up...
College football remains the only major team sporting event in the United States of America and the world, where the championship of the sport is not decided by an elimination tournament. End of story. I rest my case. Time for college football to join all the rest of us in the 21st Century and have a playoff. Let's settle it ON THE FIELD!
Guys, we all know that the current BCS isnt the best system possible, but it is the best we have ever had. Has everyone forgotten the 1997 season (last pre-BCS season) in which undefeated Nebraska played an 11-1 Tennessee (whos only loss was to Florida) team while unbeaten Michigan beat 10-1 Washington St. for a shared MNC? There were also once beatens Florida State (whos only loss came to Florida), and North Carolina (whos only loss came to Florida St.). We finished that year with two major unbeatens and no clear champion. Yeah, so Nebraska didnt deserve to go a couple of years ago, but at least we didnt have a repeat of 1997. We may or may not be in the Sugar Bowl this year, but the fact is, in previous years, we may have ended up in the Sugar Bowl as the #3 team in the nation and beaten the snot out of #4 FSU, while #2 USC throttled #1 Oklahoma to win the MNC amongst at least 3 1-loss teams (LSU, OU, and USC)..
Miami beat Florida State in 1999, but the BCS sent Florida State to the championship game. If we can't rely on head-to-head competition, what else is there? I'm sick of computer rankings (that are selective in what they rank.)
i think the bcs is not a bad system for coming up with the top 16 teams. there will always be a problem with the teams that are not in one of the major conferences, and lets face it, there are gonna be years when 3 teams from the sec or big 12 may deserve to be in a playoff over any small conference school. i am in complete hope for a miracle to happen, that being for someone to beat OU before the end of the regular season. that is the only way to get some real attention, and that is to have every bcs game filled with 1 loss teams, therefore there is no way to have a clear cut champion. how great would it to shape up something like this: ou vs. lsu, flo st. vs. usc, vtech vs. ohio st, miami vs. michigan. that will get some attention needed to get some change going.
Really the BCS is only good for coming up with the #1 team. It has slight probs with number 2 from time to time.
This is the year where someone is going to be left out in the cold. All seven of the top teams are going to probably be favored in their remaining games, none of them play each other. It is a very real possibility that if OK loses in the National Championship game then you could have as many as four teams with one loss each. At this point every one of these teams could stake a claim at why not us. If this continues on the path it is on now this will be the best case yet for a playoff.
