“This is how liberty dies--with thunderous applause.”... I thought, from a political strategy standpoint, that was a great line... showed Lucas' true intentions with this movie.
Most of this saga has been in the works for 30 years. But if you read in-between the lines of both the movie and his quotes from Cannes (like the author of this piece did), he's no Bush administration fan. As for the liberty dying to applause line, it's similar to what Bush said when speaking in NY the other day re: Social Security. See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda. (Applause.) Errr, doesn’t it have to be one or the other, truth or propaganda? One shouldn’t really need propaganda or persuasion if one is merely speaking the truth? Propaganda refers to deliberately false or misleading information that supports or furthers a political cause or the interests of those in power. The propagandist seeks to change the way people understand an issue or situation for the purpose of changing their actions and expectations in ways that are desirable to the interest group.
So, does this make me a storm trooper? Damn, I always wanted to be a Jedi Knight. :bncry: But hey, thanks for posting that, I needed a good laugh this morning! Puts me in a good mood for my return to beautiful Louisiana after being stuck up here for too long. I love 4 day holidays!
Anybody that takes political cues from a guy barely one level up from D&D dorks needs help (and an education.)
Lucas is a Socialist (not a shot here, he really is) and hates Bush as much as any of the elite Hollywood left does... Many consider him more extreme than Michael Moore...
So what? It's America and he can be whatever he wants to be. It's just a friggin' movie. Clint Eastwood is a liberal/libertarian, do you think he is making political statements in his films, also? Film makers have been crafting tales on every topic under the sun with every spin known to man for a century. Anything to get an audience. Lucas must know what he is doing. Star Wars broke all records. Even Moore set the all time record for a documentary. I really don't let movies change my perspective, I just let myself be entertained (in the case of Lucas) or bored (in the case of Moore). It's just a friggin' movie to me.
