after hearing it on radio I had to see for myself. We go from unanimous #1 to #2 after losing in the last second of a rematch with UT. The good news is this will be what motivates these ladies to go on a mission and destroy the field. thanks AP writers or whoever does these women's pollls. Posted on Mon, Mar. 07, 2005 Stanford women No. 1 again CHUCK SCHOFFNER Associated Press Stanford finally made it back to the top. The Cardinal are No. 1 again in women's basketball. With a big assist from Tennessee, Stanford took over at No. 1 in The Associated Press poll on Monday - the first time the Cardinal have led the rankings since December 1996. They replaced LSU after the Lady Tigers lost to Tennessee 67-65 in the championship game of the Southeastern Conference tournament on Sunday. LSU had led the poll for the last five weeks and had a six-week run at No. 1 earlier in the season. LSU (29-2) dropped to No. 2 and Tennessee (26-4) climbed two spots to third. Neither will play again until the NCAA tournament. Stanford (28-2) played Arizona State on Monday night in the championship game of the Pac-10 tournament. Five teams split the 45 first-place votes from the national media panel, with Stanford getting 28. LSU received 10, Tennessee had three and No. 4 North Carolina and No. 6 Baylor each received two. Stanford had 1,089 points in the voting - 30 more than LSU. Tennessee was another 37 points back. Wisconsin-Green Bay and TCU returned at the bottom of the poll after being ranked earlier this season. Maryland and Gonzaga dropped out. Stanford was No. 1 in the first six polls of the 1996-97 season, when coach Tara VanDerveer returned to the school after guiding the U.S. basketball team to the gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics. The Cardinal's only other appearance at No. 1 was the first poll of the 1992-93 season, seven months after they won the national championship. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/merc...s/california/northern_california/11073736.htm
That's OK...I'd rather go into the tourney on a one game losing streak. Puts the law of averages in our favor. In other words, i'd rather lose now, when it doesn't mean anything, than a week from now.
What a load of crap... LSU loses to two very good teams, Rutgers (#19 24-5) and Tennessee (#3 26-4)... While Stanford loses to TN and unranked Oregon (20-9)... Kick some NCAA Ass Lady Tigers... I want to see a Final Four revenge against those damn Vols...
Once again, the beast known as the media rears its ugly head and manifests itself in the west coast bias we see with USC. I can't stand those Wiccan, Luciferian worshipping Calipornians. It's okay, at least bball has the tournament where polls don't matter.
Why such the narrow view of our most populous state? I'm from Louisiana but live in CA. I defend southerners to the VERY few here who think we're all hillbillies, so I'll also defend myself and my neighbors from those who think we're all hippies.
Well I for one like LSU's position. They go back to the drawing board, take care of that nagging rebounding problem they have had from time to time this year, and come out hungry as hell. If there ever was a quality loss, this was it. Tennessee is still a damn good team, and even with the rebounding problems, found themselves with a 4 point lead with less than 2 minutes to go. The only other problem I see is closing out games. Baylor, UT and the Rutgers games were poorly played in the closing minute(s). Let Stanford have the #1 spot in the polls. I'll take the hardware at the end of the tournament instead.
