LSU fans will learn a lot this week when Coach Miles names his assistants, in particular, his coordinators. If Muschamp leave, that doesn't mean that Bill Clay HAS to be named DC. Will Miles go out and scour the ranks of coaches and hire innovative coordinators with great reputations, or, does he stick with his boy Clay? If Bill Clay is named DC, that is a very bad sign for the future of LSU football, not only for the immediate consequences (a sucky DC) but, gives us a glimpse of Coach Miles' decision-making ability.
There is a poster on TB that I have come to respect for his knowledge and honesty, and this guy just posted a few minutes ago that Jimbo Fisher is meeting with Miles right now for a position on the staff. Whether Miles accepts him or not, who knows...but he is interviewing. He also says 'it is a fact' that both Jimbo and Will want to stay in Baton Rouge, despite both feeling very slighted about not getting an interview. Says they are swallowing their pride and trying to hang onto their jobs. I only hope Miles gets along with them and sees the benefit they provide.
C'mon! Let Dooley go?!?!? We need him! If Dooley stays, he can get us into the SEC record books for the team "to allow the most blocked punts in a 3-year period". :hihi: ...on a serious note: I agree about Muschamp. If nothing else, a lot of players really enjoy playing for him. It's evident on the sidelines. He's a real firey coach and recruits ver well, IMO.
I'll say this right now---and I like Jimbo as a coach and am not sold on Les---if Les has a pair, he won't hire Jimbo Fisher. Here's the reason: there are fans and players who think JF shoulda gotten the HC job. The fact that he passed on previous opportunities to interview elsewhere as a HC tells me he wanted a shot at this gig if/when Nick left. Hiring Jimbo, even if it is "on the merits", will look to some as if Les was forced into retaining him. He also sets himself up for having his power usurped simply because, again, people will look at Jimbo and think, "He wasn't given a fair shake. He should be the head coach." Why put up with that noise---real or potential---if you're Les? It's your job, you're now running the ship, you put your own people in place under you. Period. Believe me, there are assistant coaches who will express interest to Les in available positions on his staff. It's not like if Les doesn't hire Jimbo that he's having to scratch and claw for other OC candidates. Nick Saban had problems retaining staff in Baton Rouge yet never had a problem replacing the departed with talented assistants. You can make a name for yourself at a top ten program as an assistant too, you know.
I think he is giving courtesy interviews. I doubt he is going to keep an OC and DC from a previous staff he has never worked with. Thats typically how these things go. Unless there is some connection between Jimbo, Will and Les Miles I dont see him hiring them.
Even if not as OC, Jimbo could be a benefit to the program. Whether he would accept anything else is unclear. I'd doubt it, but if he were asst. HC or something that might be sufficiently bonafide enough for him.
As for Muschamp, it is entirely in Miles' favor to keep him. If he keeps him on, and the defense suffers - it won't be on Miles, they'll say Muschamp was Saban's puppet (right or wrong). If he fires Muschamp, and the defense suffers - it will be all Miles' fault. With the track record of our D, he might as well give him a shot.
