Here's the beginning of a piece from today's Reveille (rest of article here: http://www.lsureveille.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/04/01/424d5aea66043 ): And as for rumors of JV leaving...
funny how at LSU good thing are being said about Miles, bad about Saban. Then at OSU they are saying good things about Gundy and bad things about Miles. Wonder why that is?
I am warming up to Coach Miles more and more every day. I am really starting to like the man and I am excited about his future and the impact he will have at LSU. My only concern about his "calmer" more "docile" coaching style and approach is the way the kids are going to react to it in the long run. I think that one of Saban's greatest accomplishments at LSU was his ability to run a very clean program and to improve the academic standings and standards (I say this with the anticipation that nothing will arise in the next few years that contradicts that image). The current roster of players were all recruited by Saban and they all knew what type of coach he was when they signed to play in Baton Rouge. It's a fact of life that lots of kids are most responsive and most productive under the tutelage of a strict and unforgiving disciplinarian - kids actually fight to get in line for the chance to play for guys like Bobby Knight. I don't think it's anything to lose sleep over, but I do wonder how Coach Miles' style will translate when it comes to production and getting the best and most out of the players. Pete Carroll has enjoyed incredible success with a calmer, "buddy" type approach at USC - but, Southern California is a very unique place in regards to attitude, approach and outlook. I think that Pete Carroll's coaching philosophy is similar to many of the California and West Coast high school programs feeding that region. I thought Saban's philosophy fit well in the Swamps and throughout the Gulf South. Just a thought - the good thing is that we'll certainly get the answer at some point. Great to be talking football in April...
