Here were the poll numbers AFTER the Michigan loss to Ohio State (and USC had just beaten Cal by 2 TDs):

    Harris (114 voters)
    2. USC.........2621
    3. Michigan...2620

    Coaches (63 voters)
    2. USC.........1444
    3. Michigan...1428

    AP (65 voters)
    2. Michigan...1502
    3. USC.........1493

Anything stand out? You got it, the AP stood firm that Michigan was still their #2 team in the nation.

If Florida slips past Michigan in the BCS tomorrow, the likelihood is that AP voters will still have Michigan as their #2 team. Should Florida go on to beat Ohio State and Michigan thump USC in the Rose Bowl, look for the AP to buck the system once again (although this time around they have no ties to the BCS) and place Michigan as their #1 team in the country and crown them national champions while the BCS crowns Florida. With the fallout of the AP and the BCS this past year, the AP has more reason than ever to do it.

That BCS sure is sound system for picking national champions.

The AP is no longer part of the BCS equation (they asked to be removed) In my book, that means they dont mater.

But be honest about it, would they not matter if LSU was sitting in UM's position in the hypothetical (not-so-hypothetical) presented?

Yes, but they still name a MNC. USC proudly has that 8 1/2 X 11" certificate proudly on display next to their crystal ball.

AP still matters and history will record it as such.

As I indicated on other threads, I don't see Florida jumping past Michigan. Their margin of victory over Arkansas wasn't great enough for that to happen.

What could be more hipocritical than the AP leaving the bcs for the stated reason "we want to report the news, not make it", then making the news by crowning their own NC?

I disagree. The rematch crap is all media. The voters realize that Michigan had their crack at OSU and they lost. What's proven by playing again? Despite the 3 creampuffs on Fla's schedule, they beat highly ranked teams and survived the conference CG. I have to think the voters have enough sense to push them to #2. Rose will take the traditional Big 10/Pac 10 matchup, so it's Sugar and Irish ass-kicking for the Tigers. Bring it on, baby.

Somehow I just knew Sabanfan was a real happy man tonite.

Notre Dame will look foolish against LSU. Utterly foolish.

Here is someone else who agrees in the hypothetical of a split championship

    http://www.bcsguru.com/racefor2.htm

"But an Ohio State-Florida matchup leaves open the possibility of a split national championship once again. Michigan is almost unanimously ahead of Florida in the AP poll (63 of 65 voters) and is unlikely to be jumped by the Gators for the No. 2 spot. If Florida somehow upsets Ohio State and Michigan impressively trounces USC in the Rose Bowl, the Wolverines just might win the AP title over the Gators."

    sounds an awful like this:

"If Florida slips past Michigan in the BCS tomorrow, the likelihood is that AP voters will still have Michigan as their #2 team. Should Florida go on to beat Ohio State and Michigan thump USC in the Rose Bowl, look for the AP to buck the system once again (although this time around they have no ties to the BCS) and place Michigan as their #1 team in the country and crown them national champions while the BCS crowns Florida."
