My brother made the strongest argument I've heard yet for a playoff. January, 2004 - LSU has just won the national championship over Oklahoma. Now, as you recall, we entered the first game of the season ranked, what, 4? 5? I'm not complaining. We lost Mauck and Lavalais and a lot of the team coming into 2004. Makes sense. Until you realize the following. Let's suppose that USC and Oklahoma, ranked higher than us, had gone undefeated. (I think USC did.) Simply because of the fact that a team rarely drops in the ranking if they don't lose, LSU could've gone undefeated that season and been shut out of the national championship game. Lemme repeat that. The defending national champion would've gone undefeated and been shut out of the nc game. Suddenly, I realize why I'm such a proponent of a playoff. I don't know if this has ever been posted or not, but it just occurred to me, as the title suggests. LSU!
i'm not motivated enough to look it up but i thought LSU was just outside of the top 10 before 2003 started.
That makes a great point, but when you really think about it, the national championship should have the 2 best teams of THAT year, regardless of what happened last year. But yeah, an undefeated SEC champ should always be in the NCG no matter what. It's tough to chose between 3 teams but Auburn's low preseason ranking was the reason they din't get it, so i do see your point.
Yeah you shoulda put Auburn in your argument, cuz it really happened. Then it wouldn't be a hypothetical.
